DJ Premier of Gang Starr released a statement, addressing the controversial press release from Guru’s friend Solar…but more importantly, addressing the tragic loss of Guru, his old friend, his GangStarr counterpart, and a hip hop legend:
IT WAS A SAD DAY FOR ME TO GET CONFIRMATION ON THE DEATH OF A MAN WHO I WILL CONTINUE TO CALL MY BROTHER, KEITH ELAM, BETTER KNOWN AS GURU OF THE LEGENDARY GANG STARR. FROM 1988-2004, WE EXPERIENCED SO MUCH SUCCESS TOGETHER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND OUR BUSINESSES INDEPENDENTLY AND GIVE EACH OTHER WHAT GURU CALLED “CREATIVE SPACE”, BEFORE PLANNING TO REUNITE FOR OUR 7TH LP WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT. TRAGICALLY, WE WILL NEVER REACH THAT DAY. I’VE BEEN ASKED TO COMMENT ON A LETTER SPEAKING ILL OF ME WHICH WAS SUPPOSEDLY WRITTEN BY GURU IN HIS DYING DAYS. ALL I WILL SAY ABOUT IT IS THAT OUR TIME TOGETHER WAS BEAUTIFUL, WE BUILT A HIP HOP LEGACY TOGETHER, AND NO ONE CAN RE-WRITE HISTORY OR TAKE AWAY MY LOVE FOR HIM. ONE THING I WOULD NEVER DO IS PLAY AROUND WITH THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS LIFE. I WILL CELEBRATE GURU’S LIFE… I WILL HONOR HIS MEMORY… I WILL GRIEVE WITH THE ELAM FAMILY OVER HIS UNTIMELY DEATH…

DJ P’s letter is genuine and authentic. That other letter from Guru was fake. No way he wrote that as his last letter to the WORLD.
Do you think, Solar & Guru led a secret gay lifestyle & were lovers. That’s why Solar is being so protective.

I don’t understand where the gay rumors are coming from. Is it something people are saying to hurt Solar’s feelings. It disparages Guru too.
Someone trying to jack funds and legacy from a deceased man doesn’t correlate with them being gay together. What am i missing?

I think the rumors make a lot of sense as the details of the actual sickness that took guru are sketchy at best, and they make a lot of sense as to why guru would sign over medical decision making powers to solar.
being (allegedly) gay doesn’t(necessarily) have anything to do with falling out with primo, but it would make a lot of sense with regards to solar’s behavior in “protecting” guru in his last days.
In any case, it’s a sad day for hip hop and I can definitely hear the hearbreak in prem’s letter.

It just seemed like a sideways way of going at Solar to me when in reality what he seems to have done as a “person” (gay or not) is the bigger issue. I just don’t understand sexuality coming into the picture when greed seems to be what usurped anything here.

it stems from the description of GURU’s relationship with Solar. Its always described as “producer, partner and business associate”. I don’t know about you but I get the producer/business associate part, but “partner”?
Why is dude so protective of GURU’s health and legacy? Not allowing the family/friends visit Guru in the hospital, that’s some jealous/over-protective lover shit. Solar looking like he wants Guru’s legacy all to himself.

@sunraw, i agree it doesn’t matter one way or another and what the “person” does being of most importance. I think the rumors where just people trying to figure out what was going on and why it was going down like that. gay was plausible, the other option is that solar is just absolutely out of his mind with no moral compass to be playing these games with a man’s life and legacy that meant so much to the genre in attempt to big up himself or his business or continue to perpeuate some drama even in guru’s death…I honestly think protecting his lover is way less damaging to the public’s perception of solar and why it seem’s totally plausible.
if they did have a relationship, you’re stuck holding the bag about how to explain why you were the guy with the power. with how homophobic hip hop is, do you explain that to people immediately after his death, knowing that will (unjustly) tarnish guru’s legacy and hurt your future business prospects of mooching off the memory of guru by become the gay guy guru was with. or do you just try to play it off like that was just your mans and ‘em and you had his back and felt you knew him well enough to speak on his behalf and make all kinda wild statements…
in either case the gay part doesnt matter, but solar is disgusting liar and what he’s done regardless of where it comes from is absolutely shameful.

Reading this brought a tear to my eye and its so tragic that he and guru were not able to mend things..as a hip hop head this hurts..trying to be positive and not ruin the legacy but this dude Solar needs to stop being a leech..No matter what he does he will NEVER succeed at trying to erase what Primo and Guru created..I hope his family gets everything under control and away from this evil clown..that is all

Let my recognition of the “ignorance of my youth” preface the following statement… Daily Operation was the 1st CD I ever boosted from the record shop. I took that shit right out of the ‘longbox’ and left the empty box waiting for the next sucka!So yes I am part of the reason CD’s got locked in cages but I’ll tell you this… walking away w/that and then listening to the joint; I knew I was a bboy for real. I think all of this is a bunch of bull. I do not think Guru would have left a letter such as that one saying the things they said he said. I don’t think one would write a farewell letter to his family and fans such as that one. Guru knew he was dying so why would he die with hate in his heart for someone he had been successful with. I know you have to forgive, you don’t forget but you have to forgive in order to walk through gates. I think Solar is full of s**** and he really needs to be ashame of himself for doing some mess such as that.

I will truly miss guru, when i first started to like hip hop 15 years ago gang starr was the crew that always bump to , i remember listening to mass appeal when iwas like 10 years old that got me hooked to them . I bought moment of tryth back 1998 i love that cd true classic. this guy solar is a fucking piace of shit he deserves a good ass whopping for braisnwashing guru with taht 5 percent religion bullshit and for writing that fake ass letter I believe he will pay for his sins , he was always for guru money and he knew that guru was his golden ticket out the ghetto he is a fucking oppurtunist fuck that nigga hope he catches a bullet in the head
