Diddy calls the deejays out: “DJs don’t expose you to the newness”
Posted by Miss Info under hmmm....?[20] Comments
But after catching some DJ-flack, reminiscent of Jermaine Dupri vs. Greg Street, Puff posted a vlog to slight amend, but not totally back down.
My take on both Diddy’s first comments and his reactionary follow-up has been the same…..maybe the problem is what deejays you’ve been listening to, Puff. Obviously at high-rent, hoity-toity spots, the DJ has to cater to a certain crowd that’s not really interested in “the newness.” Its easier to book a DJ who is willing to risk “clearing the dance floor” if you’re not underpressure to move cases of Dom P.

As a dj that tries to step away from the obvious ‘hits’ in my sets, I find this vlog really frustrating!!
I think there are PLENTY of dj’s out there trying to do EXACTLY what Diddy breaks down here, but the bottom line is there are very few major clubs or radio stations that wanna take the risk and put them on. Dj’s have to pay rent and end up succumbing to the easy and safer route. Something you will never catch me doing, but I dont blame them for doing it!
There are still countless smaller club nights going on with fresh new music being played, trying to push boundries and keep this scene interesting and there are also thousands of underground radio stations trying to push new different sounds aswell. I got a feeling I know the type of radio stations that diddy would tuning into, and the type of club he’d be going to, so in my mind, diddy blaming the dj is ridicoulous… we’re out here but no one is putting us on!!!
What I’ve seen happen again and again is the dj’s that are trying to be different and take risks end up not getting enough work, struggle to pay bills and end up having to get full time jobs and eventually pack it in… Meanwhile some dj dropping ‘pop champagne’ at a ritzy penthouse spinning for p diddy’s birthday party is getting payed $5,000.
I think jay smooth should make a post about this!!

I am sorry to say I totally agree with diddy on this. It is true that a good number of local D.J.s break new music and show new artist love but in comparison to the ones that dont it does not mean much.We are probably talkin like 11 to 1 worse in N.Y.. I live B.K., they never break any new records or artist at clubs. I can not speak for other regions but here no way.

Puffy you need to kill that Ish! Get the fukc outta here with that bullish! You and others in your finacial position pay dj’s and stations (I won’t mention any because I will respect those who don’t have nothing to do with that.) to play only your label and artist music to keep your stuff in rotation. How many times Bad Boy, Def Jam, Atlantic and Interscope paid DJ’s and stations to lock down the airwaves where we hear your artist 75% of the hour. Then yall pockets are so deep that the new cats can’t even afford to compete with paying these people so they can’t even pay their way threw like you do so they can’t get heard. So you need to stop homey! Plus when is the last time you supported any of your artist 100%? I’m sure wack ass Danity Kane and Day 26 getting radio spins and getting nominated for BET Awards and others and nobody ever heard their album. Now who paid for that? I bet dj,s like Enuff, Flex, Clue, Envy, Kay Slay, Green Lantern to name a few are like this nigga Puff is crazy. All the wack artist they played for Bad Boy when it was new hot cats out and Bad Boy had all the time brought out at the stations. You name 1 artist! Just 1 one artist right now on Bad Boy that deserves to be in rotation on radio right now! Come on Puff you know you reading this. Just give me one Bad Boy artist and a single that deserves to be on radio or video rotation right now? Nigga and you better not say Cassie! That Original Girl ish was garbage and still hit radio and video countdowns and was in rotation. How? Don’t say cause it had Lil Wayne on it cause it was torture to sit through that song to wait on Wayne verse. Keep messing around Puff talking reckless like we don’t know what’s good. That’s why Big Joe and Mark Curry are about to go in. Not to mention Shyne is smelling like NY. In the words of Sista from Watts “You had your turn nigga, get back and let these kids eat!”

I’m sorry Miss Info for losing my cool. That is some real nonsense Puff talking about.
The last artist on Bad Boy worthy of getting broke at radio was Yung Joc and that’s cause the South was hot. Now the South is on it’s last leg and we are in Hip Hop Survival of the Fittest stage. The artist that are relevant at this stage in the game by region are as follows… West Coast has Snoop Dogg, The Game and Ice Cube made a great come back and made himself relevant again. Dr. Dre will be in that loop shortly. Midwest is Eminem and Kanye West. (Nelly, Chingy, Twista are all dead. I believe B.O.N.E. Thugs and Harmony will be relevant again in the Midwest now that’s Flesh is home and they are all back together.) South is T.I., Lil Wayne and Ludacris. Rick Ross was on that list until the recent 50 incident. Now he’s done. Everybody else is done! News Flash! The South wave is over so yall artist running back to the beach with your surf boards(New Albums) are going to be looking at calm waters. For example Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Slim Thug, Lil Flip, Flo Rida, Shawty Lo. Oh heck everybody except those mention above. East Coast has 50 Cent, Jay-Z, and Nas. Jadakiss been sitting on the bench longer than Stephon Marbury. Cory Gunz is hot in the streets but that’s about it until he proves himself commercially. That kid is like advance technology. They don’t know what to do with him and don’t get it yet. Miss Info can you please start a blog and ask who are the top 5 artist in each region and let’s see what people from all over have to say. I’m just one opinion from one region. I believe it will be interesting.
Much love Miss Info,
The Invisible Bully

There is 2 sides to this story..
1. Diddy is right you just here todays music and not yesterday on groundbreaking cuts…There are mad new cuts on a lot of albums however its all political for example I spin every friday and if I did that the club owner would let me go but is Flex did it its okay….There are a lots of good djs other who are not getting exposure due to who you know in the bus.
2. But if you are in mainstream the some lub owners will not like it because it does not keep people coming back..
This is why I suggest there be a dj union
peeps hit me up..djaygus@yahoo.com

Promote your own party – play what you want to play. Probably easier said than done in NYC though.

Man, F**k Puff Daddy, i call him that becuz thats his name, he keeps changing his name to add excitement to himself. Now all of a suddent he has problems with DJs. Remember the NY marathon, vote or die campaign, blah blah, mtv, blah…Puffy is that bad sore tooth that wont go away, when u think its gone, it just pops up again…

Calling the Dj’s out like that is a double edged sword. There is creative responsibility and there’s also job responsibility. Everyone needs to be able to appreciate that. Its bad when the criticism is coming from Puff especially…because of all the things he’s associated with. I wonder what he really, really thinks of himself. You know when you say something dumb, and you know its dumb…I wonder if Puff has that filter. Can puff possibly think New York gets fooled? Can anyone on this planet who hires a GhostWriter for their hip hop album talk about the Newness? On one end Puff makes power moves, he’s one helluva business man, but his artistic voice and creative integrity Pale in comparison. Spare us the Vlogs, spare us the lessons in old school hip hop. Puff steals the shine and locks it away.
