Debate This: CNN Calls Nas “The Greatest Lyricist of All Time”
Posted by Mikey Fresh under interview[84] Comments
We’ll probably never get tired of debating the best rappers in hip-hop. It will just be weird for a lot of us when those debates no longer include (BIG, Pac, Jay, Nas, Em). I’m not saying this will be our future but who can really predict the next hundred years of rap? Even Nas, an Mc always included in top 5 convos, says it’s too early to say who is the king.
“It’s wayyyyyy, way, way too early in our lives,” he said when asked where he fits among history’s best MCs. “It’s great to put a list together, but don’t take it too seriously because your list won’t matter 10 years from now or 15 years from now. It’ll be a different list. (spotted at HHW)”
However, CNN feels Nasir already has the title. In a new opinon piece, writer Eliott C. McLaughlin, attributes Nas’ longevity, catalog , and consistency as to why he is “The Greatest Lyricist Of All Time.”
Let us know what you think!
read more of the articles’ points after the jump…
With “Life is Good,” Nas dropped his ninth No. 1 hip-hop album since 1994. Seven of those have gone platinum, which places him second among rappers only to Jay-Z with 11. (We’re not counting compilations or collaborations here, only original solo efforts, and yes, Tupac Shakur had nine, but five were posthumous releases.)
It also ties Nas with Snoop Dogg or Snoop Lion or whatever his name is, and it puts the Queens native one plaque ahead of Eminem, Too Short, OutKast and LL Cool J, all of whom belong in the greatest-ever discussion, as well.
….
In a genre not known for the longevity of its luminaries, making it 10, 15, 20 years means you’re a survivor — and you survive only if people keep buying your music.
Unlike his aforementioned brethren in the Multiplatinum Club, Nas has done that without a platinum single. Not “Street Dreams.” Not “Nas is Like.” Not “Made You Look.” Not one.
….
Here is where that “lyricist” v. “hip-hop artist” distinction becomes important. Jay-Z said it best himself: He’s not a businessman; he’s a business, man. When you consider 11 of his albums have sold at least a million copies — seven of those 2 million or more — as have his four collaborations, two with R. Kelly and one each with Linkin Park and Kanye West, it’s as if Hova is King Midas, but with platinum.
He’s a hit maker extraordinaire, maybe the world’s best, but that doesn’t translate to best lyricist. Jay-Z acknowledged as much on “Moment of Clarity” when he rhymed, “If skills sold, truth be told/I’d probably be, lyrically, Talib Kweli.”
Even in dissing Nas on “Takeover,” he explained why he had sampled Nas’ lyrics on “Dead Presidents”: “So yeah, I sampled your voice; you was using it wrong/you made it a hot line; I made it a hot song.”
And that, friends, is the crux of the debate: hot lines vs. hot songs. No one would deny Hova his dap, but it seems he has said, in both word and action, that it’s tough to top Nas.

Top 10 lists, declarations of all time Greats are sure fire attention grabbers. While Nas is my personal favorite, I’ve come to avoid this topic often as at this point it’s really a matter of personal preference. I’ll just agree that certain MCs are in that elite grouping.

I will give it to Nas for taking lyricism to the next level , but nas fell off for a few years in order to be the goat you can never fall off for any amount of time that’s why Big and Pac are refered to as the greatest but who know if they would have lived maybe they would have lost their stock. Greatest rapper of all time is Jadakiss no one realizes his entire body of work for about 20 years everything Jadakiss has put out has been masterfull. Jadakiss matured his rhyme level just as that era of real hip hop was dying. Jadakiss gets the title his lyrics are insane his flow is out of this world he could rap battle anyone punch lines come natural, everything he raps about is real he usually doesnt need an extraordinary beat. Plus he still managed to stay relevant in an era of people who think drake is better than Big. I would put Jadakiss up against any rapper ever I’ve done alot of rap homework. Before big died he was ditching his long time friends to hang out with the LOX. I Respect Jadakiss the most cause he never forgot where he came from stayed in the hood, his loyalty lies in the streets because he knows they made him who he is no streets no story no story no rap no rap no nothing

The problem is that there is a lot of politics with radio and hip hop journalists who are well respected. too many hipster hip hop sites who know shit about hip hop and too many hating journalists who support and dickride certain artists for exclusives cus it’s all about business

It’s sad to me that it took CNN, a new outlet to point out the obvious with very valid points and facts that these so called hip hop journalist plainly ignore. The article is the best hip hop article l have read in years that made the right points. Nas has had 7 platinum albums with no #1 singles and has lasted 20 years! Besides, the article was on point and made very valid points.

Couldn’t of said it any better myself. I believe one of the criteria to be considered for the G.O.A.T. is to have a substantial body of work to allow critics to have the opportunity to compare and contrast material against other candidates. Although Pun was a great lyricist his debut and followup, he fails to meet this criteria with only two albums to be judged on. You can make the argument that BIGGIE only had two albums as well, however I think most would agree that BIG had a slight edge over BiG PuN with his impact and influence over the hip hop community.
January 6th, 2013 at 6:34 pm
nas is easily the best lyricist, nothing can touch it was written lyrically, not to mention illmatic, the lost tapes, etc nas’ unreleased songs are better than almost every rappers entire catalogue

What are you ignoramuses talking about. The fact that a credible and reputed news channel is endorsing what most ‘real’ hip hop fans know but is deliberately ignored by the hip hop media who are immersed in the music politics is the real shame. It is the hip hop media that as lost every credibility over the years. By the way, This article is very close to what The Source came up with; Nas being the 2nd best lyricist of all time behind Rakim even though I reckon Nas surpassed him already.

CNN has struck a nerve! In the same breath you call Nas “one of the greatest and then call his album subpar.” I truly believe Nas is the artist hip hop fans love to hate but I guess that is what makes him GREAT because his talent is what
has him remaining on the lips of the naysayers for damn 22 years. If it is a marketing/promo technique to capture the “white audience” it is no different than artists receiving promo on the hip hop Forbes’ list, doing interviews with Oprah, being seen in a pic with Warren Buffett, photo ops flying on a plan with Sir Richard Branson or advertising buying art with Lyor Cohen ect. CNN is actually a major leader in worldwide news, so congrats to Nas & his team for the GREAT promo! LOL!
Have you ever been to a Nas concert? The majority of his audience is “white males” and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Although I see him in the argument CNN can’t determine anything for me. This is HIP HOP. What has happened. There’s nothing to accept as someone stated its a matter of preference. Rap is not like singing where you can judge vocal range how someone holds a note etc. Yes we can compare metaphors, similies, the ability to tell a story or whatever as tangible barometers of skill. But at the end of the day you will never an agreement on who’s the nicest because the music is about what you attract to. Andre 3000 is one of the nicest ever in my opinion but for the person who’s into the street ethos he might not rank as high. And so on. But to use record sales as a barometer to me shows that even if he thinks Nas is the best he still led off with some non hip hop shit. Record sales. Fuck a record sale. Vanilla Ice sold records, whoomp there it is sold records. Yeah longevity counts. But I hate the business aspect permeating the discussion of who is the nicest. Im from the place in time where skill was skill a million sold on 10 sold, if you’re nice let’s battle. Just like fighing. You might get paid to box but if we fight in the street and I put the beats on you, you still got the beats put on you even if you get paid.

Nas best lyricist from the late 90′s to present hands down. Jay-z is the slickest talking mofo to touch a beat. If only they would of teamed up earlier in they career that would of been best of both worlds. AMEN

I personally think that when people say Andre 3000, they making the decision based on his outkast verses and guest features only. He is defintely an exception to the rule IMO. Where as most artists on the top ten greatest rappers list are album makers, Andre’s skill and lyrics surpass most rappers just on his features alone. I think most fans would agree.

JayZ was good in the past and kept getting better (minus BP2 ofcourse); the same with EM and Nas. That’s your opinion bro but if you think Jay is close to Nas lyrically then you my friend is being biased. Nas clearly can do more with lyrics than Jay. Lets put it like this, Nas can rap about everything under the sun while Jay can rap about only a few things. Alicia Keys put it into perspective when she was asked who she rated higher between the 2; http://92q.com/3711736/alicia-keys-says-nas-is-a-better-rapper-than-jay-z-exclusive-interview-2/
Of course its her opinion too but you get my point. Also this article is very similar to The Source top 50 lyricist of all time; http://rapgenius.com/discussions/8591-The-source-top-50-lyricists-magazine-scans
In summary, every tom dick and Harry has an opinion but very few have educated opinions. Peace.

OK honestly.. I am not huge into the rap/hip- hop scene, but I know who the real greats are. Tupac, biggie, etc. But I feel when it gets down to lyricists, guys on the outer edges of the category get ignored. Rage Against the Machine is by no means totally rap or hip hop, but it’s freaking amazing. Zack de la Rocha can rap exceptionally well and writes even better. I think mixing that talent with how he orients his music, has to bump him up to some sort of spot in great lyricists of the category. Yes Rage got the angry punk scene, but when you really look at it, it’s angry political rap in one of its most pure forms, and I think he deserves some real recognition for that. Feel free to disagree, but there is no denying the talent he has.

Ghostface is actually the MC I most listen to and I know it’s all subjective and what have you but…
I have to say as far as caliber skill of word play / poetry, Illmatic and the unreleased tracks Understanding, True Dialect and Deja Vu are (for me) the zenith of this art form called lyricism.
Illmatic’s technical word play, soulfulness, eye for detail, conciseness and the angles Nas approaches his range of subject matter from still £@cks my head up to this day.
Lyrically it’s the best work I’ve heard put to music in any genre!!
I suppose that, for me, makes Nas the best lyricist I’ve heard!

I feel like Pac wasn’t a great lyricist and I always am surprised when people mention him in this debate. Pac definitely was one of the greats but imo it didn’t have anything to do with lyricism. Pac sorta had the total package (pause) if you look at his ability to make good songs, his delivery, persona, image, voice, subject matter, style etc. I think most of his lyrics can be considered pretty simple but that’s what made his songs stand out in a way. But in terms of great lyricists, he definitely, again imo, wasn’t in the top 5. Nas on the other hand, is definitely in my top 5.
PS: Why are people bitching about CNN? Be thankful that a hip hop artists even gets a mention on such a international platform. Let alone, gets mentioned in a statement like this.

CNN is more credible than most of you fans & hip hop media outlets. Most of you consider a hip hop artist to be great based on their $ and what billionaire their seen taking a picture with or what business deal they are involved in, which has NOTHING TO DO WITH LYRICAL SKILLS or TALENT. It is absolutely wonderful that the leader in worldwide news can give Nas his respect. Much respect to Nas & congrats on being such a great lyricist/artist.

As a teenager in the 90s’ from Nigeria ; I listened to rappers like Nas and meditated in their lyrics every day. Now guess what? I became one of the best Rappers to come out of Africa and I have visited the whole world and currently based in the United Kingdom with some couple of millions in my bank account
All I’m trying to say is that if you appreciate junk or micro wave rap you may end up as a junkie. Rappers like Nas, Snoop Dogg, Tupac , Biggie, Wu Tang, Jay Z, KRS 1, Ice Cube etc helped to give most African rappers a strong Rap foundation to build our own rap culture from.
Thus, it’s very scary that the new crop of Rappers in America have not imbedded the school of thought of these legends. It’s really shocking that the new rappers of today don’t even care about lyrics any more, they don’t see biting another rappers’ style or rhymes as a crime no more. Well thanks to Nas and other real heads as I can confidently say the REAL hiphop has moved to Nigeria. It’s so funny how Nigeria always comes into the picture
But if you doubt me; then ask about Festac Town, in Lagos State Nigeria. That’s the Mecca of real Hiphop right now. We were all schooled and mentored by the lyrics of the above mentioned legends.
Peace I’m out.

what if Nas and Jay-Z never really squashed it , and they still have tension. in 2001 it was very clear that Nas won that battle , but damn near 12 years later bloggers and some radio personality’s are discrediting Ether , and saying how much better take over was. the fans at that time clearly thought Ether was a better diss record. i to this day think it was a knock out. now in my conspiracy theorist mind , i feel Nas got played a little. 1. swiss beats was the original producer of that record. but then ron browns did it. what happened ? why didn’t swiss finish the record ? what did the swiss version sound like ? 2. for years on different web sites i had seen some verse that also mentions big pun pulling out on jigga , but i never heard it on wax , mp3 , cd , nothing. i read that Colombia kept going back to Nas saying he was to harsh , chill out , and kept telling him to change it up. i want to hear what how original version sounded like. now , the jay-z side of things. ok , so he lost the battle , issues start to come up over at the roc , with dame , cam’ron , the state property mc’s getting into legal trouble , ect. i’m convinced that after blue print 2 jay was like ” i need to get away and come back stronger. so he “retires” , drops the black album , dead’s his business with dame , and starts to reformulate a master plan. it comes down to money. look at what jay-z was worth in 2003 , and now. he made genius moves in the business world. money is power. so he goes , gets his money right , becomes the president to def jam , signs “hit makers” and then gets ready to comes back. i think he must have read some ancient war / revenge manual cuz so far it looked perfect how he was working it. he has the i declare war stunt and brings nas out who he just happens to squash the beef with. then he signs him to some weird deal at defjam with Colombia. then he drops kingdom come. now personally , i liked kingdom come. i thought it was a solid record. (side note: jay-z worst album was vol.1.) but it may have rubbed some people the wrong way … they wanted that gangsta pimp jay-z , not the filthy rich guy. a month later after a delay , hip-hop is dead drops , and we finally get a song with them both. beat was solid , but that nas verse , eh… the jay-z verse was fire. could be he had a few extra bars then nas … eh what even. so then a year later boom , American gangster is born. the synergy was a perfect match even tho the movie was so-so , not the classic it was built up to be , but that album was. Nas and jay on a track again , and yet again jay-z out does him (side note: i am a die hard Nas fan). Nas drops untitled after label issues and its a solid album for it’s concept. a few misses on it , but over all a good album. (Nastradamus is his only trash album) now , i think that at defjam jay made it seem as if he had good intentions for nas , but look at hiphop is dead , and nigger. they were not handled well. and on top of that , he wanted to drop a lost tapes 2 , and that was met with a no. period. jay aint have any say in any of that ? i wonder. then , who helps (but really straight up writes) the jigga book ? dream. who claims that the nigger album had ghostwriters ? dream. who is jay “friends” with ? dream. come on man , tell me all this don’t look fishy ? i’d rather believe what i think to be true then any jay-z Illuminati theory.

Lol @ your conspiracy theory. Am just gonna throw your theory in the bin by telling you some things you apparently dont know.
First of all, its true that Swizz started the original production of Ether and Nas completed it with Ron Browz. The lines about Pun and Terror squad shaking up Jay in club Carbon was removed by Nas himself cos he was moral enough not to involve other rappers especially as PUN is dead in his own battle. Besides, Fat Joe already expressed some kinda opposition to those lines when he was interviewed about it. I guess there will be clarification on this issues and more in his upcoming autobiography; It aint hard to Tell co-written by Toure.
2ndly, you cant be serious about Jay out rapping Nas on Black republican or Success. We can do the battle ourselves through the lyrics if you are down. Matter of fact BET did a list of rappers that got killed on their own shit and your guess is as good as mine as Nas appeared on the list by killing his hosts on Live at the barbeque, Mobb Deeps eye for and eye and Its mine, Jay’s Success. Yours is just opinions although it can be argued that BET’s opinion is educated and yours is not.
3rdly, Jay’s American gangster had no formal relationship to the movie. It was Jay doing what he does best; leaching. y’all call it being smart. Fact is it wasn’t the official sound track to the movie.
Also, LA Ried brought Nas to DefJam after Nas decided to leave Columbia. Jay just happened to be the president at the time and they happened to squash their beef prior to that. Hip Hop is dead executive produced by Nasir via Jones Expy label/DefJam debuted no 1 on Billboard with 355K first week sales. The Nigga album dropped despite raising a lot of hell in the media and even the government and still debuted no 1 on Billboard.
Most importantly Jay was only president of DefJam for Nas’s Hip hop is dead album as his tenure was not renewed for alleged non performance. (Jay president from 04- 07) So Jay clearly had nothing to do with Nas again after 2007;Untitled dropped in 08 n lost tapes 2 issue happened in 2010.
Lastly, the Dream buffoonery was borne out of Dream defending her friend that was being pilloried for lack of social content in his records. She got emotional and decided to make unsubstantiated claims about Nas who is renowned for his social content. You see what she did there?
I hope with my aforementioned points, I have been able to discard your theory like used tissue. Peace.

BET and educated in the same sentence was hysterical. it is a matter of opinion when it comes to the verses. i am a diehard nas fan , i was 13 when i bought illmatic . i can also be honest and feel that on black Republican and success , jay-z was better. to each his own.
you didn’t have an answer as to why swiss didn’t complete the song.
i know that jay-z american gangster was not the official soundtrack , he used synergy and the film as the concept behind the movie. it was dope actually.
as far as Nas at defjam , i am merely speculating. and just cause jay left the label didn’t mean he couldn’t still have friends or higher up’s in the building. the music business is all about relationships and networking. for example , say jay wanted to hear something early or know something or stop something and some one in that building who had enough power to make it happen for jay , also some one who would want to later join jay at his label or get a good word by him with some one he had a relationship with , ect. so it’s a favor for a favor. that’s not completely out of the realm of possibility. did it happen ? i don’t know. COULD it have happened , of course.
i could see what your saying about dream being possible as well.
again , what i said was just food for thought , something to think about. i my self cant say the majority of it IS actual fact. it’s just something to contemplate.
i will take what you said and use it like a tissue after i rub one out and just clean up the mess of jizz after i just had a wild thought.
TO ALL PEOPLE , lets try and be less condescending and more open to sharing ideas , and giving each other input rather then be a snotty prick and just saying ” i’m right , your wrong , and an idiot” . this is why people rather argue their points vehemently , even if they are wrong because they felt like some one was just being a prick to them and they didn’t want to “lose” to a prick.

When I say educated i dont mean it in the literary sense. BET despite their recent buffoonery were once a reputed custodian of hip hop hence their opinion is very likely to be better than yours. Like I said we can do a battle with the lyrics if u r down.
2ndly, like u alluded to, its a mere conspiracy theory but unfortunately it doesnt add up hence it is liable to be discarded like used tisssue.
How did Nas get played a little? Nas joined DefJam at the request of LA Ried who was the C.E.O and Jay happened to be the president at the time and both him and Nas happened to squash their beef prior to that. A 4 album deal worth a reported 11 million dollars was signed and what did Nas do? He proceeded to drop his most controversial albums; Hip hop is dead and Untitled with both debuting no 1 on Billboard. So where does the getting played come from? LA Ried was basically running Defjam when it had no president after Jay’s contract was not renewed and him as the as the man with the executive powers made d best business decision for the company by not giving the green light to Nas’s idea to release the Lost Tapes 2 as part of his 4 album deal. Nas tried to hustle them but LA Ried was having none of it.
Lastly I dint resort to any name calling, all i did was discard your conspiracy theory.

bet has not been relevant in a respectable capacity for a long time , but as far as hip hop goes i’d say once big tigger left rap city ( and im being kind , because i think joe clair’s era was the best). opinion is always a matter of taste. it’s not a fact. i like pistachio and think it’s the best flavor , you may think chocolate it. neither of us can have a definitive answer because it’s just a matter of taste.
i accept your lyric challenge.
i don’t believe they truly squashed their beef. i think it was all some frinenemy shit. a good business move by both.
i think Nas was lured to def jam. he could have wraped up his Colombia deal , went indi , and set a precedent. i think jay SENT l.a. to chat him up , and just bring him so he could keep an eye on him , fuck with his albums , not give him the best budget , just jerk him. period. again , i said I think , i dont know if it’s fact. just something to think about.
i think Nas was bored and wanted to stay relevant and thats why he made “controversial” albums. they weren’t that great. they we solid. worth the the $10 at best buy. but not better then the album before hip hop is dead or life is good.
if it was a 4 album deal , nas dropped hip hop is dead , nigger , and then life is good. he’s a free agent right now , so that number you came up with is wrong.
and that 11 million dollar deal , was it an old school deal or a new 360 deal ? i saw a lot of money spent to promote them albums that ONLY went gold. life is good his his best album since stillmatic and it HAS YET to go gold. it would have been in def jams best interest to release an album of left overs because it would have come out of 2-3 budgets from old albums rather then a new one.
look , i could very well be dead wrong. but , i wonder ya know …

I see you are just playing the devil’s advocate. Nothing wrong with that and am also constructively dismissing your conspiracy theory, nothing wrong with that too.
Also, I agree with most of what you said about BET. Like you said opinions is a matter of taste but unfortunately for you, me and BET are on the same side of the divide.
We can start the challenge by posting the lyrics to Black republicans and Success then proceed to analyze the rhymes, punchlines, metaphors etc inherent in them.
Jay aint sending his Boss; LA Ried to chat anybopdy up, stop playing. LA Ried saw an opportunity to bring a well established rapper with a core fanbase to DefJam at a time when the lable was being pilloried for turning into pop. Like I said, your theory is off the mark cos non of those things you stated happened. HHID executively produced by Nasir Jones on his Jones expy/defjam which was the only album Nas dropped when Jay was president dropped without much ado and debuted no 1 on Billboard with 355K copies. Am sure Nas and his team chose what they believed was a good deal and I highly doubt they will go for a 360 deal. Thats what these new niggas in the game are signing not a vets like Nas with multiplatinum plaques b4 the ROC had one jam. By the way, he had the choice of joining Atlantic records and was offered d presidents role but chose DefJam. His comment then was he knows a good deal when he sees one.
I agree HHID and Untitled were solid projects that served their purpose, nothing more.
Its a 4 alum deal and he just dropped his 3rd one after 1)HHID, 2)Untitled, 3)Lifes good and his working on his 4th one. Do the numbers right bruv.
Good discuss, no name calling like kids. Thumbs up.
