Back in 2016, Common revealed that he was working on his new album with jazz and soul maestro Robert Glasper and Stones Throw drummer/producer Karriem Riggins. While Glasper and Riggins did indeed produce Common’s Black America Again LP, that isn’t all the trio have been collaborating on.

Today, Common, Glasper and Riggins have announced they’ve teamed up to form a new band called August Greene. With a little help from Brandy, the hip-hop/soul supergroup are making their official debut with “Optimistic,” a cover of Sounds of Blackness’ 1991 gospel song of the same name. And yes, it’s as bright, soothing and soulful as you’d expect.

“Optimistic” will appear on August Greene’s self-titled album, dropping March 9 via Amazon Music.
