Rapper Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly, one half of the 90s duo Kris Kross, died at an Atlanta hospital on Wednesday evening. The 34-year-old was found unresponsive at his Atlanta home says a representative from the Fulton County medical examiner’s office. No further details have been released as to the cause of death, as his body is set to go through further examination on Thursday, according to Billboard.

UPDATE #1: CBS Atlanta added a note to their story on Kelly’s death, saying that the police suspect “drug overdose” as the cause of death.

“A spokeswoman with the Fulton County Police Department said unless the medical examiner finds out something different, it appears Kelly died of a drug overdose.”

UPDATE #2: So So Def and Chris Kelly’s mother has issued an official statement.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1. To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him.”

After the jump

Kelly and his other group member Chris Smith made a name for themselves in 1992 for their trend-setting fashion and hit album, Totally Krossed Out, which spawned their hit single, “Jump.” They were discovered by Jermaine Dupri. Back in February, the duo performed at Dupri and So So Def’s 20th anniversary show in the ATL.

UPDATE #3:
Akini Jeffrey, the morning producer of at Atlanta’s 94.5 FM shared a story about speaking to Chris Kelly just this morning…. (via Necole Bitchie)

I was extremely shocked to hear of his passing because I actually called him this morning at the radio station around 7:52am. Basically, I was doing show prep and came across a blog site that had his birthday posted as today. I was trying to remember if that was correct because I remembered it being August 11.

I just randomly called him to get him on the air to see if it was true and wish him a happy birthday, and he answered the phone. You can tell there was a lot going on in the background. Chris said to someone, “It’s Akini from the radio station, baby”. He also went on the apologize to me for not showing up to a radio interview that I had him scheduled for back February for the So So Def reunion.

Chris also stated “Tell everybody in Atl I said what’s up.”
