I had a really amazing talk with DJ Atrak and Lord Finesse last week while we were at the Business Class x Lacoste x Jo’s dinner in Nolita. Aside for the general catching up, it was so great hearing Atrak and Finesse’s memories of DJ Roc Raida. Atrak told me about how Roc Raida took him under his wing at the age of 15 after seeing watching Atrak win the DMC Championship in 1997. And Finesse remembered Raida pulling him to the side to tell him that Atrak was the future, a cosign that meant obviously meant the world and laid the foundation for a million opportunities to come. Lord Finesse shared tales of how him and Roc Raida actually battled each other, precipitating a quick retirement from battling for Finesse, lol….but even beyond the tour tales and career highlights, both men shared what kind of a human Roc Raida was. So its no surprise that everyone in the DJ world who’s in NYC today is getting together for tonite’s Roc Raida Benefit at BBKings….Raida is survived by a wife and 4 children, so the proceeds go to them. My boy DJ Enuff has been talking about this for weeks, and just look at the lineup (after the jump)…incredible: D.I.T.C., The Beat Junkies, the Allies, HeavyHitters, 5th Platoon, Roli Rho, Craze, Atrak, Dummy, and more…
I’ll definitely be there to show love too.
BONUS: DJ Atrak wrote a great post on his blog about Raida, and sent me this song that he did with Hell Rell, JR Writer and 40 Cal “Don’t Mess with the Dips.” ATrak says that it was Raida who called Dipset and made the song happen….
