donna-summer

It’s a sad day in music. Legendary disco queen Donna Summer passed away this morning at the age of 63 after a long battle with cancer. The iconic singer exploded onto the scene during the ’70s with such hits as “I Will Survive,” “Last Dance,” “Hot Stuff,” “She Works Hard For The Money,” and “Bad Girls.” In later years her classics would be sampled by Nas, Royce Da 5′9″, Tech N9ne, and most famously Beyoncé on her 2003 hit “Naughty Girl.”

The 5-time Grammy Award winner was in Florida at the time of her tragic death. This comes a day after the legendary “Godfather Of Go-Go” Chuck Brown died at the age of 75 after being hospitalized with pneumonia. Among Chuck’s ties to recent rap history, his hit “Bustin’ Loose” was sampled by Nelly for is 2002 chart-topper “Hot In Herre.”

(Ron Burgundy, Brian Fantana, Champ Kind, and Brick “I Love Lamp” Tamland are back)

Things I am excited about….webcasting live from Hot97 Summer Jam again; the premiere of MTV’s Hip Hop Squares;  this Great Googa Mooga food festival that I’m going to in Prospect Park with It’s The Real; the wedding of a beloved co-worker; the Intl’ Contemporary Furniture Fair at the Javits Center; Prometheus, new Sherlock Holmes episodes, shrimp tacos; black and white cookies…ok, now I’m just getting off track.

But I’m also really excited about this Anchorman 2 movie starring Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell and more…well, maybe anxious is the word. I want it to be good. Anchorman 1 is one of my all time favorites. But when has a sequel to anything ever been a good thing? Let’s just try to stay positive and check out this bootlegged teaser before Paramount Pictures shuts it down.

Speaking of Ron Burgundy…what about Will Ferrell’s other upcoming projects?
And check out the Anchorman 2 poster…

Yesterday morning, Tip stopped by Hot97’s morning show to chat with Cipha Sounds, Peter Rosenberg and Kay Foxx. And you know from the jump, the Kang had to take on the drama-filled questions.
After fending off talk about Iggy vs. Azalea, Meek Mill, Tiny being pregnant and more, Tip spoke on a more serious matter. In light of Obama and Hov supporting gay marriage, T.I. gay his stance.

“To be absolutely honest with you, I don’t care. I don’t see what the big deal is, why some people are soo against it. Why would you be so against it if it doesn’t affect you or your lifestyle. I’m not in that world.”

Fif never fails to seize a moment. Last night, he started tweeting pics of himself in a hospital bed and postponed his 7pm live interview with Peter Rosenberg. It took a while before we found exactly what was wrong with him, but AHH reported it was just a stomach virus. 50 tweeted something having a surgery and even call out for Floyd Mayweather’s support, ahah. Well, in the midst of that he dropped a new video from The Big 10.

Nicki Minaj finds love from a fellow Queens native in “Right By My Side,” the Benny Boom-directed video featuring Chris Brown. Compared to “Starships,” the Harajuku Barbie tones it down and brings us a romantic story with her on screen beau who’s none other than Nas. The King and Queen ride for each other and show unconditional love in the feel good clip. Let’s not forget Chris Brown who lends his support complimenting Young Money’s first lady in a nice playful shot. No drama with this video, simple good loving that ends with one memorable kiss.

Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded out now.

2 Chainz and one of hip-hop’s most hated/loved female rappers just dropped new visuals for their T.R.U. REALigion collabo. You would be surprised at what super-producer told me how good Kreay’s records were. For real, dude said people literally locked him in the stu to listen but that he was blown away at the end. He’s produced for EVERYONE. Directed By Alex Nazari.

Pharrell quietly changed the name of his label from Star Traks to I Am Other last year…and assembled a whole new crew of artists and creatives. This around the same time that he also took on a slew of new projects, from “creative directing” at Karmaloop, to teaming with Diageo and Cornerstone for a new liquor “Qream“, to musical directing the Oscars with Hans Zimmer, to compiling a photo book, to enlisting designer Mark McNairy for BBC’s “Bee Line.”

All amazing endeavors….but back to I Am Other, here’s a high-production-value introduction video to the label, starring Pharrell and some of the new acts, Buddy, Leah Labelle, Maxine Ashley, etc. Very Close Encounters of the Third Kind, right? In keeping with Star Traks’ DNA.

The video was done by Justin Francis. Big up to creative director Mimi Valdes, exec producer Robin Frank, Pharrell’s right hand Mick Moreno, and the BBC crew (Loic and Phillip).

Speaking of P, I love this very simple but information piece that Hypebeast did on Pharrell’s favorite accessories.
