2018 marks the 20th anniversary of Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) and Talib Kweli’s classic collaborative album, Black Star, but that might not be the only reason for Black Star fans to celebrate this year. During a surprise appearance at a Madlib show in Denver on Saturday night (Feb. 10), Bey teased the arrival of a new Black Star album produced by the Beat Konducta himself. “New Black Star with Madlib, Talib Kweli, Yasiin, coming soon!” he told the crowd. “All Madlib, all day. New Black Star, 2018, Madlib, Black Star. Madlib, Black Star.”

While Black Star and Madlib haven’t officially released music together, an unreleased track from the trio did hit the Internet a few years back. Madlib also dropped a joint album with Talib Kweli (2007’s The Liberation) while producing a number of songs off Mos’ 2009 album The Ecstatic.

Given their history of announcing projects that never see the light of day (like Black Star’s Aretha Franklin mixtape and Madlib’s long-awaited Madvillainy 2 LP with MF DOOM), Black Star and Madlib fans know better than to hold their breath for a new album from the trio. But don’t let that stop you from dreaming.
