Best part of VH1 Hip Hop Honors 2009: The vignettes
Posted by Miss Info under concerts , good for hip hop , laugh with , old music , quotes , videos[39] Comments
This vignette was one of my favorite parts of the show….but overall the black n white doc-style clips from Lyor, Rick Rubin, Russell, and LL Cool J were the highlights amidst a mishmosh of some shaky (Onyx, Rick Ross, Ja/Ashanti) and some solid (Eminem/Roots/JazzyJeff) performances.
More vignettes after the jump…
(This seals it….Brett Ratner would definitely get a seat at my dream dinner table)
these really should have been either own show.
Just watch all the clips play….albeit slowly….over at the VH1 Hip Hop Honors video page….lots of great stuff there.
UPDATE: Dre posted the actual Hip Hop Honor’s show on Nahright.

that “do it for the logo” piece was my favorite vignette, and it wasn’t easy choosing… Lyor is so real about his love and commitment to the business… feel good evening with some great performances… not all, but some were epic

da show was deplorable!!!…and i had high hopes for it…i can list names of the artists who BOMBED on their performance and had their bosses (and ex bosses) sitting in the rafters like “uhh why did i sign this fuck in the 1st place???”,…but i wont!
also…yo Fab, lmao…i dont got twitter so if someone does get him to answer this question…how does it feel to be a gold/plat’ selling DEF JAM ARTIST and be reduced to only doing a hook??? (jay z’s hook at that lmfao!!!)…cmon bro i believed u on ur current album’s intro when you eluded to not taking the disrespect no more in this “shit business”…well they shitted on you HARD!!! niggro…Kid Rock corny ass got more stage time than you…you should’ve just said “no i wont do it,i’ve brought hits to this label!”…so yea man how does it feel…miss info, u ever interview please ask him…or if anyone got twitter (cuz he FOREVER on that shit)…tell him to “tweet that reply nigguh”, lol!

Jesus christ VH1’s setup for playing shows sucks, 2 minutes of the show then a 30 second commercial…. again and again. I really dug the vignettes too, my fav was probably LL’s… its just cool the little stories told. Some of the performances were horrible, I really wanted to dig the Regulate performance but Trey was just… not Nate Dogg. Foxy looks preggo

LOL I was seated by Foxy and thought the same thing when I saw her. I’ll be honest the show seemed like it should have been longer just to allow for fuller performances. For example, DMX going Where my Dogs? at and/or Whats my name?
Again they did the best with what the had.

the biggest fail was the fact that they cut out DJ JAzzy JEff’s incredible scratch clinic he put on during that LL Cool J tribute…that got the crowd on their feet.

Who are you tellin’. I was like “huh? Did I miss something.”
Not just this show but many hip hop based programs in the t.v level anyway seem to be struggling to balance the art that goes back a couple decades and keeping the current audience interested. I mean can you really justify Ross performing???

Jazzy Jeff murdered that shit! I’ve been tellin kats he was nice on the wheels for a minute now. (even in the Fresh Prince era) He always stayed true to the one’s & two’s and never went “Hollywood”.

jazzy jeff’s “rock the bells” routine is one of his most famous/best… i thought they made him abbreviate it for the show, sad to hear they actually edited some of it out.. even so that performance was the best of the night.. eminem was so CLEARLY a fan! he was so into it, ill moment

Overall, I felt that it was a good show. The best performance of the night goes to Em/Roots/Jazzy Jeff. I was disappointed with the Onyx performance. I expected more.

Onyx was good but I think they had sound problems. (They woulda beat somebody down 4 that back inna days) They should have done something else but I don’t think VH-1 was having “Throw Ya Gunz…” And I was praying Sticky didn’t fall off that speaker.
EPMD rocked it too although they should have had more stage time to do more hits.

It would’ve been dope if they did “Throw Ya Gunz” but I agree that VH-1 wasn’t having that. Instead of having a band back them up, they would’ve been better off with just a DJ.

Yeah, that “Do it for the logo” line was the best! I rewinded that like 4 times! lol
Rick Ross performance “shaky”? Was I buggin’ or was the whole crowd was feelin’ that? I don’t know about you sometimes, Info. You go EXTRA hard against Ross (too hard [pause]). If you’re gonna be that bias ALL THE TIME you should just write for ThisIs50..

youre bugging. I was there in the audience. I like the song, but my issue was that it was a tribute show….new artists perform oldies, and some old artists perform their oldies with new artists. But new artists performing new songs? wtf

….I noticed how amazed or confused folk were of Ross’ fashion selection for the evening.
My homegurl was like “Is that a titty I see?!?!?”

Point taken.
I personally think the worse performance was a tie between Foxy (and I’m a big fan) and KRS (especially after I saw what he had to say about Def Jam when he was being interviewed on the red carpet). I’d put Onyx at a close 2nd.
PS: I appreciate the reply. The interaction is one of the things I enjoy about your site!

KRS killed it! Freestyling is hip hop.. he even had a line about graff! and then ending it with “Adam get well soon” was crazy. Wale tried after but couldnt do it the way the teacher can

How can anyone watch Em’s performance compared to others (especially Rick Ross) and still have the balls to defend him not being on that MTV list.

Keep it real INFO – he gets respected so people hesitate to mention him but SCARFACE’s performance was horrible, made all the more worse having been followed up by a energetic LUDA performance.
p.s. Whenever I hear ‘Guess Whose Back’ I cant help but think of the far superior JAY-Z verse.

um th performance was slow but I disagree about the verse that song is a classic each verse on it was crazy
i’m a Beans fans, but even i’m not gonna disrespect face on his own track Jay’s verse was solid
smh you’re buggin
There were no best verses on that song, thats why it’s hot and felt incomplete without the others to perform.

O.J. JONES – Funny but WTF? RICK ROSS – still convinced he owns a gay sex tape feat JAY-Z, RUSSELL, LYOR, and anybody else large who has done a song with him. The bare feet – fit totally into my image of R. Reuben. Loved the LL clip – once he pointed out the University Pl address I realized – “oh shit, NYU” — I was slow on that one. TRACY MORGAN,and the props incl. the deaf school translator worked well. DMX, still a great performer despite his personal issues. One of the more simple, but so hip hop classic lines: “u niggas remind me of a strip club / everytime I come around its like I just gotta get my d@#k sucked.” Where the hell was LL (a night off from NCIS is all-is there beef?).

IF THATS THE CASE INFO, WHY YOU CALL JA/ASHANTI Perform. SHAKY!?!?!?!?!?!?
**********That’s oldies performing oldies, am I right or wrong? That’s the issue with our genre of music, we have folks that have a big influence on the majority of those who listen to the music, that rather bash and chastise, instead of uplift and support. SMH ****************

Show was garbage, only thing that was worth seeing was the eminem/black thought performance, and the PE performance. Everythign was else was trash.

The Public Enemy performace gave me chills! PE always brings it regardless of who listens to their message. KRS 1 killed it on the freestyle tip! I was hoping he didn’t rock the Beasties lines on “No Sleep…”
That’s what you call a REAL MC kiddies.

It may be me but I think someone screwed up on Meth & Mary’s performace. I saw them perform the “All I Need” remix plenty times killin it but it seems something wasn’t right. I luv that song so I was pissed!

The vignettes really speak to the rich history of Def Jam and its artists. What I think made some of the performances lacking was poor song selection. Now if I have DMX performing on TV for what seems like the first time in forever there are only 3 songs that I would want to hear – Get At Me Dog, Ruff Ryder Anthem, What’s My Name. Nothing else. Although Onyx performed their biggest hit, Throw Ya Gunz would have worked more. As much as I love Warren G and Regulate, that song is not a perform on stage get the crowd excited kind of record. They could have used Warren in a vignette to explain how he singlehandly rescued Def Jam during their drought in the early 90’s with his G-Funk Era CD. The Roots definitely don’t get enough props. They definitely do this for hip hop, no doubt. They could have let Black Thought fall back and just opened the joint with just Em. Em still doesn’t perform with enough energy for my tastes but I understand why people dig it. Starting to see Kid Rock at these VH1 shows. People need to understand that Meth & Red had successful recording careers b4 they got together. This was the venue to remind people of that. How come Redman doesn’t get a chance to do his solo shit? It was nice to hear Ja/Ashanti. Ashanti not the most enjoyable performance but this was probably the most attention she’s gotten since like forever. Wale is definitely benefitting from being signed to a major and getting incredible marketing/promotional placement at these sort of events but he doesn’t have a place in the current hip hop landscape as of yet so why have him performing at this event? Gym Class/KRS…ehhh type of performance. Should have done either Hold It Now or Paul Revere. The sort of Def Jam melody at the end was confusing to say the least. EPMD performing Crossover was lackluster. Their most memorable songs came while on Sleeping Bag but if they were going to perform, they could have done Headbanger. And I think EPMD should get next years hip hop honors treatment by the way. Poor song choice for Foxy. No Jay equals no go. Ghost’s performance and song selection was out of place at this venue. Rick Ross was more focused on promoting DTR and Triple C. And of course Fab was wasted but at that point I think Def Jam just wanted all of their current artists who were not superstars to perform and I think they accomplished that. Would like to see more hip hop related music coming from him though. Lyor is showing why he should be on camera more often. Tracy Morgan is the kind of guy that is more funny off camera than he is on camera. I found it more funny that they got Nancy Grace to participate in the promotion. Are we stuck with Tracy for the forseeable future as the host? And finally, Rick and Russell’s vignettes vividly shows how music can bring 2 people from different cultures together to make something truly magical. Def Jam is our Mowtown so it was deserving of the VH1 treatment. Grade: B-

Besides the LL tribute and the vignettes, DMX’s performance was highlight, specifically for the cut-aways to Lyor rockin’ out and singing along. You know when Lyor was swinging his arms around in the beginning, he wanted to just stick those middle fingers up…would have been classic!

Overall I thought it was a real great show and it brought back a lot of good memories for me growing up with Def Jam through the years with all the great artists they have had. I liked a lot of the vignettes to one of my favorites was the Def Jam being like our Motown because to a lot of us it was. The LL Tribute was easily the best of the night! Speaking of LL do you know why he wouldn’t perform Miss Info?
PS-If anybody wants to check to you could read my thoughts on the whole show as well as some of my other blog entries on my page by clicking my name. Any feedback is appreciated and sorry for the promo for myself thrown in there Miss Info lol!
