@4 nonchalant misfit…wow, really? I had no idea people even knew/cared : ) But thank you so much for linking me to that post, I’m actually too scared to read it but I love that folks realize how dope the Source was back then. Reggie Denis, James Bernard and Jon Shecter were the most amazing mentors a hip hop writer could ask for. And those days were some of the best of my life. I only wish I knew how good it was back then, I was too young to really document everything like I should have.
Maybe one day I’ll start a memories blog.
And that’s funny that someone mentioned it on Just’ blog, his writing is amazing too.
Now at the end of your post you mentioned what is possibly the greatest regret of my career….4.5 for Ready to Die. I think looking back, I loved it as much as I loved Illmatic, but it seemed like too soon to have another 5 for everyone, and somehow the level of abstract poetry wasnt the same.
In hindsight, that should have been irrelevant. What Nas had in abstract poetry, Big equaled in humor and style.

yo, Mi…Shortie! haha, my bust on putting your gub’mint name out there with my last reply. I didn’t mean to blow your cover! But yeah, that “random fact”, I actually discovered while reading the replies to Just Blaze’s recent post on his blog about the shindig at 40/40. His post went off on a tangent about the first time he listened to Criminal Minded, which prompted other cats to “wax” nostalgic (pun intended) and reply with similar memories. Some cat reminisced about his personal experience with Illmatic, and gave you props for the 5-mic rating. I did a little homework (aka “working the Google on the internet machine”) and got the back story on the review, about how Jon Shecter got the advance like 8 months before release and was all amped up about it, which led to Reginald C. Dennis feeling let down upon first listen after all the hype.

Mad props to you, the original Source Mind Squad…eff it, all the hip hop journalists/writers back in the day. Good, thoughful, intelligent writing with a hip hop aesthetic is certainly lacking in print media nowadays, so I get my dose of dope words from blogs such as dallaspenn.com, nahright.com, and now yours. too many others to name.
