Posted by Miss Info under Good For Hip Hop , New Music[8] Comments
my boy FWMJ just posted the new Michael Jackson/Jackson-5 beat project that his boy The Are produced for Dem Damb Jacksons (which is Madlib’s brother Oh No, and Kay). So make sure you check it out, its free and good. You already know, I’m more of a drugrap 90’s gal, but I still got love for all : ) And I especially like “They Don’t Want It.” Kinda reminds me of Dipset on lean, lol….

whaaaat?! TheAre x StonesThrow.
lemme find out, info.
awesome post. especially since i feel like i’ve been slippin on my indie rap grind.
thanks for the pick me up. =].
I read more of that lil wayne interview somewhere too.
You must have the most unique voice in that world.
Some people can’t sing and can just use their voice very uniquely. I was watching these clips on E! of the worst people singing the National Anthem and – what’s the dudes name from that rock group – the nigga with the big lips?
Steven Tyler.
Steven Tyler? That’s the nigga with the big lips? That nigga’s like the worst ever! The secret – WHITE PEOPLE CAN’T SING UNLESS YOU’RE ROBIN THICKE!
He’s the only one?
I know they got more but I don’t feel like thinking right now. I just… I don’t care – fuck them!
hahahhaha. man is nutso.

yo, Mi…Shortie! haha, my bust on putting your gub’mint name out there with my last reply. I didn’t mean to blow your cover! But yeah, that “random fact”, I actually discovered while reading the replies to Just Blaze’s recent post on his blog about the shindig at 40/40. His post went off on a tangent about the first time he listened to Criminal Minded, which prompted other cats to “wax” nostalgic (pun intended) and reply with similar memories. Some cat reminisced about his personal experience with Illmatic, and gave you props for the 5-mic rating. I did a little homework (aka “working the Google on the internet machine”) and got the back story on the review, about how Jon Shecter got the advance like 8 months before release and was all amped up about it, which led to Reginald C. Dennis feeling let down upon first listen after all the hype.
Anyways, you’re referenced twice here: http://ifihavent.wordpress.com/ for the Nas review and Biggie’s too. The entire review, lifted straight from the Source.
Mad props to you, the original Source Mind Squad…eff it, all the hip hop journalists/writers back in the day. Good, thoughful, intelligent writing with a hip hop aesthetic is certainly lacking in print media nowadays, so I get my dose of dope words from blogs such as dallaspenn.com, nahright.com, and now yours. too many others to name.
I see a few heads have been already started getting at you about record reviews and ratings! lol, my bad
and since you’re a self-professed “drugrap 90’s gal” i bet you’ve reconsidered that 4 1/2 you gave to Biggie! admit it!
anyways, as far as posting up The ARE’s music, that’s a good look. I heard it for the first time last night after heads on okayplayer were ranting and raving about it for the past couple of weeks, and the shit is dope. My boy T-Squared – shameless plug (you knew it was coming): http://www.myspace.com/tsquezzy is ‘posed to get a track or two from The ARE.

@4 nonchalant misfit…wow, really? I had no idea people even knew/cared : ) But thank you so much for linking me to that post, I’m actually too scared to read it but I love that folks realize how dope the Source was back then. Reggie Denis, James Bernard and Jon Shecter were the most amazing mentors a hip hop writer could ask for. And those days were some of the best of my life. I only wish I knew how good it was back then, I was too young to really document everything like I should have.
Maybe one day I’ll start a memories blog.
And that’s funny that someone mentioned it on Just’ blog, his writing is amazing too.
Now at the end of your post you mentioned what is possibly the greatest regret of my career….4.5 for Ready to Die. I think looking back, I loved it as much as I loved Illmatic, but it seemed like too soon to have another 5 for everyone, and somehow the level of abstract poetry wasnt the same.
In hindsight, that should have been irrelevant. What Nas had in abstract poetry, Big equaled in humor and style.
sigh….
anyways, thank you so much for the kind words! And thanks for visiting : )
