The first single from the next great white hype… he’s got bars though, I’m not hating. Turn this on at any college bar/keg party and watch the madness ensue. Peep the Weezer sample for all you music nerds.
Another thought: This kid has potential to be huge, I think his marketablity can cross over like every genre of music… rap, rock, pop etc fans. He is the same person as the majority of mainstream rap listeners today, but are the kids ready to listen to music from somebody that looks their best friend or do they still want the comic-book character-esque, super thug- gangster 50 cent type to provide their keg party background music?
(props to onsmash)

i’m a fan of 50 and a fan of everything. this song is cool, i like the mc lyte scratch in and the beat as well, damn where have it heard from before?. he can crossover though. i mean he looks like the “average joe”. his flow was kinda straight too.

the white folks will accept him automatically but will the black, latino, etc. it took eminem alittle while to be accepted. the dre cosign, fifty’s signing, and the shoutout at the grammys for kool g, masta ace, etc. really gave eminem the so called “okay he’s cool” points.

But damn I miss college

No hate here, but this seems mostly a marketing push. The Em inspired flow, with the subject matter, is nothing that many others haven’t recorded after a keg party. I myself have spit bars extolling the virtues of college in my dorm room over an empty Domino’s pizza box and a Garcia Vega.

he does look like an average joe, but i would have to agree with your sentiments. he definitely has the potential to be huge and cross over all realms. i am curious to know whether or not he writes his own stuff though…because i wouldn’t put it past any executive or board that came up with this whole idea of a white rapper…with Emimem back with a whack as track (i.e. “Crack a Bottle” = Trash) who take the helm of his ship? maybe it’s asher rothe :-\

If it’s real its real be genuine If Kanye can drop out then asher Roth can stay in and drink smoke and party and make a record on it. I think this might be this generations Beastie boy you have to fight for your right to party anthem. This joint has that Ahmad back in the day I wish I was a kid again vive as well. I’m feeling it. He has a cult following on line so see him being successful. If he stays genuine yeah he’ll be ok. Hip hop is vast, theirs room for everybody, Even the frauds like Rick Ross. 50 is a main stay in hip hop culture. His legacy will be his brand. 50 might be the first Jordan or Oprah of hip hop in a brand standard of excellence.

i love that according to most hip hop “heads” white people need a gimmick in order to fit in hip hop.
hey, guess what everyone, i’m white, i rap and i dont go to keg parties!
i also wouldnt wear air jordan baby blue beanies at the grammys or disrespect my moms as much as other dude
lets not give Roth a pass on “not having a gimmick” when his gimmick IS being white…and rapping about what kanye did 5 years ago.
pathetic imo. rap about something that hip hop heads appreciate and ill give a ish, till then he’s another gimmick to sell to kids in the burbs to make hip hop “theirs”. tight jeans, beer bongs, suspenders….what part of the game is this??
this dudes the white version of Afroman

he’s something different in hip hop (with rappers runnin off to make r’n'b and rock albums he mite b needed)
i think its gd how hes stayin himself and not tryin to rhyme like em (big shoes to fill)

Thanks for the exposure Inf! I’ve been wondering what this kid sounded like a for minute, but was never curious enough to actually seek out one of his tunes (wow, that’s lazy… I am on this computer daily). But now that I’ve heard him I like what I hear. I know he has a major collegiate fan base so that’s all good. And I appreciate his “averageness”. On some levels it’s kind of offensive to see white cats that look like they just raided the closet of one of their friends from “around the way” in order to impress us with how down they are. Just do you.

Am i in Bizarro World? It’s like I woke up and hip hop and the culture is filled with homo’s and f******. I dont got a problem with asher roth but I do have a problem with corporate america and radio pushing theyre gimmick acts down my throat. Lil Wayne and Kanye (both questionably gay) TI and Rick Ross (Fake street cats) and bunch of cornballs in the rap game now. Even Jay-z, who I used to LOVE is like a different person now. Meanwhile cats like saigon are thrown to the wayside. Asher Roth gonna come out and most likely go platinum despite being an average MC that sounds just like eminem but lame. I heard his mixtape and it is weak.
We traded alpha-male MC’s reporting from the streets in BOOM BAP poems to some metrosexual, nerdy geeks who would get mushed on if they ever performed in THE TUNNEL(sup charles hamilton!)

I may be wrong but I don’t think this final version of the song contains the original Weezer sample. The version that leaked months ago definitely had the “Say It Ain’t So” sample but this final, video version does not. It sounds similar but its definitely a (sadly lesser) re-interpolation. Guess its my fault getting so attached to an unfinished leak. Regardless, Asher is the truth
PS: Kind of surprised you didn’t include a link to Jim Jones’ Harlem remix of the track

But for a white dude to follow Eminem, he’s unfortunately going to need more talent than this.

It’s all about the next generation… and this guy is gonna have them wrapped around his finger- just watch! Good luck to him!
When it comes to sales, I guess in some ways it will help that he looks like a lot of hiphop fans out there- but your right info, at the same time a lot of suburban kids wont dig the fact this isn’t offering that ghetto window they love to gawk thru when checkin in on hood artists, but either way he aint faking shit from what I can see… keeping it mad real and rapping about what is going down in his life and keeping up a party vibe. (which is what hiphop was based on right? more than i can say for a lot of other rap dudes that may not be wearing tight pants and lookin ‘nerdy’ and complaining about dudes that do!)
If your a fan, just remember to make the most of this era in his career whilst what he raps about is a reality to him because we all know what happens to talented rappers when they are removed from their original lives and put in the spotlight for a few years…

^ If your argument is that he sounds like Fab eh I dunno I actually was wondering what happen to him he had potential
No the better argument would have been that guy Jermaine Dupri brought(Roc)out who sounded Jay. I’m not saying Asher Roth is gonna be huge like Eminem but he definitely can work, and tour and make a living. The dude has flow and frankly in this climate he really doesn’t need black an latin approval. He has a nitch and a core group he can perform for, thats all he needs. I think people feel burned over Justin Timberlake cosign. lol Hey I’m still mad Bubba sparks didn’t blow cause dude wasn’t Eminem but his metaphors and punchlines were classic. Let me get back to the subject (tangent) He does sound Like Eminem, and I think that will probably be more of a cross to bare with white listeners then black because we listening to the flow and how he bends his voice. As for pandering to college kids or relating.I listened to Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Jay-z, Akinyele, Outkast, Eightball & MJG (shrug) Who the fuck is that close minded that he’s all their gonna listen to because he looks like them? Hey I Know Asher Roth has a lot of stans and corporate interest that hope he is the 2nd coming. I’m not willing to demonize a dude because it sounds good on a blog post. hip hop is in his heart or else he wouldn’t do it. As long as his motives are pure I see no issues with it, good luck I say. He’ll have the college crowd, sure, but they don’t buy records. He may be a mainstay in the underground hip-hop, maybe a cross-over one hitter, but not a superstar. Superstars don’t look like the average joe. (sure, strip-em down, I know, they are the same, we are all humans, yada yada..but we are all not music superstars.) Just saying.

The fact that he sounds like Eminem does trouble me and this song doesn’t really speak to his talent per se but that a millie freestyle he did was nice so i give him props for that. I wonder is he courting crossover status or does he wanna keep a low profile and just do music? I personally think it would be cool if he was going for the latter.

The song is dope and many people can relate to it. The fact of the matter is, he is keeping it real more than most of the rappers who talk about money, cars, girls, guns, and drugs. Just because he isn’t talkin bout street shit doesn’t mean he is not hiphop. Majority of dudes who talk street shit never really lived it. The dude is talking about his reality in an authentic manner, and thats somethin that any true hiphop head should be able to appreciate. People need to stop trying to put hiphop into a box. And Ok maybe he does sound like EM, but no one can say that he is tryin to be like EM cause their rhyme styles and personas are TOTALLY different. Overall A.Roth’s bars are AVERAGE at best and are no where near EMs level back when he came out. But I can live with that if he continues to make good music all while stayin true to himself and true to the art. Peace

All I can say is thank God my generation got Eminem if this is what the next ones are gonna have…
He’s college educated; he can rhyme words together. What a guy. One in a million eh..
I’m white. I can rap way better than he can. I know other white people who can rap better than he can. He’s average. I’m just above average.
Eminem is just below PERFECT.
That’s why I am happy to leave it to the professionals. If you can’t beat the best then why bother.
I hope Mr. Asher Rothstein can also face up to his limitations in the not too distant future…
I don’t hate him, he doesn’t annoy me. He’s just WAY too average as a writer and that’s just not good enough for me…if I can afford to pay extra for a top of the range product instead of something mid range then I’ll get the best product possible…and since Em and Asher’s CD’s will be the same price that one’s a no-brainer really…

Marcus, it has nothing to do with me being a white rapper. When Eminem came out, I was a big fan. You couldn’t get me to hate on Em. When Bubba came out, I was a big fan. Dude wasn’t as nice as Em, but he had some lines. I couldn’t hate on Bubba. Had all of both of their albums.
If you asked me about Immortal Technique or Pharaoh Monch, I’d tell you I don’t particularly like their work.. it isn’t necessarily my flavor.. but those guys got some BARS. I won’t hate, eventhough its not for me.
This kid though? He may sell. A lot of garbage sells these days. You don’t need hot lines. But don’t piss down my back and tell me its raining. This kid is no nice lyricist. He’s catchy though.. him and Mickey Avalon should collab on some shit. lol

Not for nothing, all he is is a wannabe Eminem. His voice sounds just like him, except he is lacking the mastermind lyrics that Eminem has. I really dislike when people come out that sound exactly like somebody else, because usually they are imitating the great ones, and they are far worse than anything you will ever see. I dont think he can blow up. The song is stupid and all he does is promote how great college is by drinking and having sex…what else is new. Come with some original sh!t please, thank you.

It’s ok. A refreshing song from all the cookie cutter raps about rims, money, swagger, hoes. Voice does sound similar to Eminem, but may be coincidence. Don’t like the fact that he is being compared to Em, since he is in no way trying to imitate Em. I think the only reason comparisons are being made is because he sounds like him and is White. Bad reasons to try to lump all white rappers together.
Song is ok, have to see with what else he can come with.

@ Broke Iz A Disease…lol I think people were claiming white to re-iterate the fact that just because he is white doesn’t mean he is guaranteed a white fan base..as shown by these white peoples opinions on here..
@ marcus…I’m white but I’m not a rapper..I just said I could rap better than him and that’s true lol…I’m a songwriter from a different genre and I’m big into linguistics which is what originally led me to study hip-hop lyrics..and if you break it down to the mechanics of rap structure (flow, meter, sylable etc.) all I’m saying is that Asher just doesn’t cut it compared to Eminem…Em’s superstardom is due in part to the gimmick of him being white but his longevity will be down to his mastery of the English language..even his silly throwaway lines (“I’m back neh neh neh neh neh neh neh neh neh neh…fix your Em antenna tune it in and them I’m gonna..”) are so well structured phonetically that you have nobel winning poets like Seamus Heaney (a fellow Irishman) praising his ability to inspire interest in poetry among this generation…so regardless of whatever subject matter Asher is talking about he just can’t do it technically as well as Eminem and it’s purely for that reason that I don’t have any interest…I don’t know what percentage of hip-hop fans are that particular about the standard of lyrics but it’s the most important aspect for me more so than subject matter…hell I could listen to Biggie rapping the list of 138 additives they put in a McDonalds Strawberry Milkshake a hundred times in a row because his flow would be smoother than the milkshake itself hahaha…
@CG…I’m tempted to say “Holla!” back but I’m white and I live in Ireland so in my own heart I would feel like a total fraud LOL…cheers for the shoutout tho
