ok, ok, breathe….look, whether you agree with Nas naming his album “N—a” or not is all good….but how can anyone sit by while people who call themselves mainstream media revel in their absolute pigheaded ignorance. Steam would have started streaming out my ears as soon as I heard the opening segment about Nas (”he made headlines this summer for performing at Virginia Tech, glorifying the murder….” ?!?!?!) , and the opening question “I thought there was a memo that went out, we’re not using this word anymore…” (What memo?!? From/to whom? Was this an interoffice memo for the the community-leaders-for-sale and right-wing-bush-humping-media-hacks cc-list??)
breathe….
and that last line…”there’s alot of dead people in Philadelphia…” because of Nas, right? The man who “brought us such hateful songs as ‘Shoot ‘em up’ and ‘Hip Hop is Dead.’”
big up to Chuck from Allhiphop and Felicia from Sohh for their restraint and willpower.

I wish someone would have compared Nas’ controversial proposed album title to stir up talk to the way Fox News skews Nas to be a horrible human being to stir up ratings. EVERYONE is trying to be on the tips of everyone’s tongues.

I think it’s funny that people are jumping to conclusions about what it means for him to call his album that. It seems like the kid is trying to start a conversation about race and the “N” word…guess he did his job.

Um Fox News? When did the memo go out that we were supposed to stop using that word? I love it when Mainstream White America acts as if they are SO concerned for our well being! LAMO! Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton do not speak for us! neither does Oprah. I’m sure Nas has a reason other than record sales, but at least he’s not tryin to make nice with Massa like some of the so-called negroe leaders Personally there are more words like “Boy”, & “Colored” that hurt & offend me I would rather be called Nigga than Colored any day cause the N-word has become mainstream. Fox news was very biased & irresponsible how can you say hip-hop sales took a 30% slump when the Kanye/50 battle alone brought in more revenue than last year & Neither of them have even listened to a Nas or any hip hop Cd in it’s entirety.
Allhiphop & SOHH dropped the ball they spoke as if they were nervous & scared their civil rights were gonna be taken!
Way 2 stand up for Hip-Hop (SIGH)

My friend to me that there was something on missinfo.tv about Nas’ new album appearing on cnn.com. I was excited to see what it was. Once I clicked on it, I saw it was Fox News. I had to totally disregard it. This news station is so detached from the real world, it’s laughable.

FOX News and every other media entity do shit like this for one reason and thats to boost ratings and gain more viewers, u could hate Fox and any other news station, but the simple fact that ppl watch those stations, be it to disagree or argue how bias there reports are, your a viewer. Personally, I don’t watch FOX news, and I’m slowly starting to dislike CNN. But, were else are we gonna turn for the News?
Ms. Info, you should start a News Station?
But Nas naming his album that is simply genius to me…the name alone is controversial, and i’m sure he’ll deliver good music on this one.

This shit is genius this will spark more interest than the “hip is dead” title.and i dont think its just a marketing ploy.but it wont be long until some atlanta rapper names his album “nappy head whore” and that will be a marketing ploy.def jam wont even have to promote everybody else will.but would they allow the dj’s to use the word when talking about the album or will it be like ” nas n word in stores now” that what id be more interested in seeing. And for those who think hip hop is dead was trash its because everytime u buy a nas album ur expecting another illmatic. Hip hop is dead was a good album i think nas only had 1 wack album and that was that double album.

Lets please not let these attention whores like Fox New, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson distract us from the real issues in America. These people crave the spot light and often say outrageous things to get people to notice them. Think about if there is no tension between blacks and whites then people like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson don’t have jobs, people like them need there to seperation in America in order for them to stay relevant. And yes I put people like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson in the same category as Bill Oreilly and Rush Limba the only difference is they cater to different audiences but they seek the spotlight just the same. DON’T LET THESE ASSHOLES DISTRACT YOU from much bigger issues like the WAR in Iraq, the phony war on drugs, the unjustness in our legal system(Jena 6), and Bush and Cheney’s corrupt politics. Because the moment you start to even argue with them about silly things like “Nappy Headed Hoes” comments and the use word Nigga they’ve already won.

If I was hov and def jam I’ll ride wit him 100%. Nas is one of the few bright spots in hip-hop. They’ll use anything to get people minds off all the racist shit that has been happening.

That shit really pissed me off, and how the fuck is “hiphop is dead” a hateful song? Umm I believe he’s referring to a musical genre…?! if you were clueless about hiphop and watched this bullshit you’d think Nas is on the same level as rapists and paedophiles, or just an evil black hitler…but then again that is what they want. They are clearly out of their league here, anyone that knows hip hop knows Nas is a very conscious rapper. I’m laughing my ass off they used his beef records w/ Jay-Z…white media is a trip!
Did he get the memo…I’m black, i still use the word so i must of missed that memo also. And why do white people feel that is necessary to put up their best slang talk when discussing something pertaining to black people “Hold on, Hold on, what up w/ dat…”
This is all comedy at best…see how long this stays in the news…when they have YET to report on the young black girl that was kidnapped, raped and tortured by a bunch of hillbillies for a week…smh
this is far more news worthy!!!

Why does Hip Hop even feel the need to go on these type of outlets and clarify or debate any of OUR issues???
All we’re doing is giving these caucazoid old heads higher ratings. Did NWA go on the evening news to defend their album content – HELL NO.
Thye’re never gonna understand us (not just black ppl – the Hip Hop Generation, period) and they will always look for ways to tear us down. We don’t gotta explain sh*t to them. Do u see Pres. Bush explain sh*t to us – HELL NO.
And I love (* Hint of sarcasm) how the dizzy ass news anchor chick was like “my glock/my pumps/etc, etc” and how she was like “rap music is down 30%”….like HELLLLOOOO….ALL MUSIC SALES ARE DOWN right now. This is the download age……Hell i watch brand new movies that are in theatres on my laptop thru movie upload websites.
HIP HOP artist gotta have that rebellious spirit that they used to have and stop trying to create a “product”. Make what the F*ck u want and put it out there. I think all Rappers should get back onto indie labels and let the majors die like the dinosaurs they are. Stop trying to validate urselves to Massa.

WOW WOW WOW!! Ok, I will say that the album title makes me want to listen because I want to know where Nas is going with this. I agree with Chuck that Nas has to be going somewhere we don’t know of yet. My thoughts on Fox News is simply this…they tried to set us back. Remember when you were younger and all the parents kept saying was “That rap stuff sounds like a bunch of noise. Listen to the language he’s using. I can believe you stuff your ears with this”. That is what they just did. They tried to make it seem like there is no message in art what so ever. I’m not even a fan of nas like that and even i can respect his words. But this seg. does make me wonder…is someone like nas not good enough to represent the hiphop part of industry? Do we really need someone pure enough with no knowledge of the street and completely just rapping not talking about social ills, city crime and things of that nature to be able to stand tall through the media? It’s kind of crazy. And to everyone who says let’s get rid of the majors allow me to say this. Without majors…HipHop/Rap would have never been major in america. It would have been just another closet sound that only some heard and not the whole world. It wouldn’t have been the bridge that pulled alot of other cultures together like it has. You need both sides of a coin…otherwise it’ll be heads they win, tails we loose

First of all it’s FOX news so basically their viewpoint is going to be emphatically skewed. second, look at the 2 “anchors” they have on there, basing their judgements on statistics. They are taking a news item off assumptions, there was no press release stating this as a fact just people talking and you know what? that’s good for CD sales whenevr it does come out. I think it’s ignorant to assume things and also use the word but like he said, if anyone was to use the word it’s NAS.

The Fox 5 reporters were blatantly ignorant and malignant. They do not understand that Nas is the voice of the largest housing projects in America. Therefore, of course he is going to try to get his message accross about the day to day violence that happens in QB by using strong, powerful words. It is quite interesting that they feel inferior because they can not understand (and probably never will) him or the hood.
White America is quick to blame things on artist like Nas, but Nas is an icon to many. He is an unbelievable therapist of the human soul. My question is, when have you seen these white people in the hood amongst the population? NEVER! So White America needs to stop trying to belittle every positive person that comes from the hood. Of course we are going to sound angered and frustrated, but that’s because there are so many superfluous problems that not even the depths of the Pacific Ocean can handle. My solution is that Fox 5 along with the Bill Oreily’s of the business should go speak to the hood, instead of speaking of topics they clealy are clueless about. Because at the end of the day all they care about is their conservative wine parties or gold vacation.

When niggas is hustling outside, do you think they are going to say oh shit Jesse Jackson and white american said we cant say nigga? Hell na, they are going to say fuck all them niggas.

I can’t believe they did this. What hurts me the most is that they can criticize an icon like Nas, who is probably the most philosophical mainstream rapper of our day. Word up, they disrespected my man Nas. How fucked up was that part where they showed all of his “gangster” lyrics?! Like Nas doesnt have songs like “i can” and “if i ruled the world”, which are just two singles with positive messages. I honestly cannot believe this. I love hip hop and Nas definitely loves hip hop. I’m buyin this album cuz i know that he IS goin somewhere with the title and I hope he keeps his head up through this.

Although blacks are 12% of the population in reality it is just 2% of the blacks that commit 50% of the murders and a greater percentage of other crimes. Consider: black females – 6%. Blacks from zero yrs. to 12 yrs. and black males from 50-100 years commit an infinitesimal percentage of the crimes. Therefore we are left with two percent. If we eliminate crimes committed by this two percent from the U.S. statistics our country compares very favorably with all Western countries. Fact — blacks kill 7 times more than whites kill. Fact — blacks kill whites 20 times more than whites kill blacks. Fact — blacks mug or commit group crime against whites 50 times more than whites commit against blacks. Fact — blacks rape white women 2000 (yes 2000) times more than whites rape black women. In New York City, about 300 white women are raped by blacks every year BUT there has not been a black woman raped by a white male in anybody’s memory (going back over 20 yrs.) Consider: Al Sharpton had to go upstate New York to find a hoax and that was almost 20 years ago. (Source NYT 4/22/05)
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics 2004 report (released May 2006), blacks commit 54 percent of the homicides in America even though they constitute only 12 percent of the population.
An individual black male is seven times more likely to commit murder than an individual white male. It so happens that black felons commit 43 percent of aggravated assaults, 66 percent of armed robberies, 27 percent of rapes and 85 percent of interracial crimes of violence, mainly against whites (this last figure from a Justice Department report 2003). However, it’s not just in the United States. The greatest dicators in recent years have emerged in Africa. People like Idi Amin of Uganda, Hastings Kamuzu Banda in Malawi, Mobutu Sese Seko, in Zaire, self-anointed Emperor Bokassa of the Central African Republic, Mohammed Saidi Barre in Somalia, Sani Abacha of Nigeria, Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe — the list is endless.
Blacks are dumber as well, statistics analyzed by the New York Times (July 4, 1999) dispel the poverty argument by establishing that impoverished white children whose parents earn less than $10,000 a year score higher on standardized SAT tests than black children whose parents earn more than $70,000 a year. Also, nearly 70 percent of black children are born out of wedlock.

Im not going to rant on and on about Fox and their news reporting integrity etc…Im going to speak only on one thing: UNITY IN HIP HOP or Lack thereof.
What I mean is that hip hop just looked disjointed and segragated on INTERNATIONAL TV (international thanks to the web). I dont want to further the disunion but I have to point out that in comparison to Chuck from AHH, Felicia from SOHH did not do a very good job on this one. Please look up Willy Lynch and see what I mean. Fox just took two of the most prominent/influencial hip hop websites (shout out Missinfo.tv) and pinned them against one another. I dont think anyone took the time to notice that. They keep doing it to us, and by us I mean the hip hop community.
The difference in opinion between both parties (SOHH and AHH) was so significant and obvious that I felt like jumping at my screen. Everyone who reads the internet hip hop news check both Allhiphop.com and Sohh.com for daily news. And even though they are competitors, I feel that this was the ONE TIME they could’ve represented hip hop as ONE. Chuck made an EXCELLENT point when he made reference to the Bush administration (even though he was shrugged off) and he stood on pretty solid ground the entire time while I feel Felicia could have been more on point. Im very proud of both of them for even going on the show as Im sure it must have been nerve racking, however maybe a private meeting between the two prior the show was in order and if there was one, it did not seem like they were together on this one. Some similar points, but I felt like Felicia bowed down a bit too much. They both should have been more agressive and that doesnt mean shouting and cursing neither.
All Im saying, is that Fox and mainstream media in general have their manipulation game down pat. They can manipulate masses so it’s easy to manipulate two people. All Im saying is let’s be a bit more prepared next time, if there is a next time.

agree with circus 100%….josh, what are you trying to prove with your “facts”? we could go all day about how minorities are underserved in health care and education. Don’t even get me started about the “justice” system. We as black people need to do better and some of us, not all, put ourselves in some dicked up situations. Regardless, if you think our country has equality and is truly colorblind, you’re sadly mistaken. We as a nation are only one generation removed from when affirmative action was an absolute necessity!! I’m talking 1960s folks! it’s 2007 and everything is better now? i’m not gonna give a history lesson, but this stuff just makes me hot. The issue of Nas’ album title is indicative of the heavy racial tension that still exists. If we were past racial prejudices and such, this wouldn’t even be an issue. Lastly, why do we feel the need to explain ourselves to white america? yes, hip hop is full of contradictions, but you know what, that’s society. human beings are complex and irrational. how can a rapper talk about bitches, niggas, and hoes and still be a devoted family man? Snoop runs a youth football league a hood where no one else has stepped to provide recreational activities for young kids. when is that gonna be a feature story? on to other stuff…….i didn’t know g-unit was putting out a group LP. I thought Beg For Mercy was on point, they had all kinda bangers on there.

JOSH STOP PULLING “STATISTICS AND FACTS” out of your ass. first of all you embody the very reason minorities of all different races can’t stand white people. You haven’t posted one website or source that you can refer to prove this bull that you type. second of all, must we even bring up murder when the aryan brotherhood gang leads in gang murder next to the prominent mexican gang. also, this land was found on death and racism. i don’t see any native americans that hold any positions anywhere in this country period. the mexicans were killed off and raped by europeans. the KKK also doesnt even need to be brought up. Early New York and Chicago were ganglands all run by WHITE people, not black. Irish, Italian, and Jewish gangs. This also doesn’t bring into account all of the instituionalized racism and people that have either been sent to jail or killed by the system and that’s just the past 50 years. You know the history, you just choose not to bring it up because white people have the bloodiest history known to man. can’t forget the current war going on now that has killed tens of thousands of the innocent, sent to war by a white man that condones killing, check his death penalty records from texas. Surely you don’t think white people are the majority in this country because of evolution do you? no, death and oppression. thirdly you say blacks are dumber and bring up an 8 year old study that i’m sure only surveyed inner city schools with kids that could care less about school and more about money. you are a bigot just like most of the white people in america and one day karma will turn it all around.
before racist, stupid, ignorant assholes point fingers like yourself………go back and read into your own bloody history and the body count that comes along with it.

oh and i find it hard to believe that blacks rapes 2000 times more than whites but commit 27% or rape crimes in america. that leaves 73% left and i’m willing to put a million on it that over half of that 73 is white men. meaning that white rape more than black thus taking away the credibility and truth of your earlier statement.

FOX News = Fictional Obnoxious Xenophobic News
They obviously had an agenda to make Nas and hip hop in general look bad when they invited them on the show to discuss the issue. Instead of taking an objective view and seeking to further their understanding of the issue they manipulated the flow of the topic to steer away from any opposing views to what they already had.
As far as the album goes, it all depends on what Nas’ album is about. He can take the opportunity to spew the most niggarish, cliche bull shit that a lot of rap music has become,(ex: material possessions, hoes, dro, and dough), or it could be something insightful and thought provoking about the contradictions and complexities of race relations in the U.S. Bottom line is we won’t know until more info is available and the album drops.
My personal feelings on the word are negative in all its forms. However, protesting the use of the word by our own people by attacking Hip hop is fruitless. (See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF_F7lH4Bqs&mode=related&search=
When Hip Hop was bought up by the major record companies, the balance between positive and negative hip hop themes became skewed in the favor of the negative themes. The fact is that these companies don’t want to put the money into promoting positive images and themes relating to and emanating from Black people. What makes things worse is the fact that so many white people feel that by listening to rap they are getting the most full and accurate depiction of Black people. What F.O.X. news wants to do is pressure us the Black leaders to do the dirty work of further limiting the freedom of speech of artists when the record companies have effectively limited the reach of the positive messages propelled by “conscious” rappers.
The real issues in my eyes are the break down of black families that puts black youth at a higher risk for all the pitfalls and negative influences in the world. If putting an end to gun violence, drug trafficking and abuse, promiscuity, lack of education is the aim, then put the money into attacking these problems from the source. Instead, so much money is put into ensuring the elements that put our children at risk are ubiquitous within the community and contribute to its ruin. Time after time public school and community programs are cut because of budget deficits, yet we have money to fight interminable wars with fictional enemies. Bottom line, the government plays both sides of the fence. They control the media that outwardly blasts hip hop as if it were the source of all that is wrong with Black people, yet finance initiatives to ensure that that the chaos continues.

Josh,
It seems that the rest of the bloggers here have decided to shower you with insults, I am going to attempt going about it in a different way. Josh, it would seem that you are white, at the very least not black, it seems that your statistics are a bit skewed and likely to be found in literature given out by the KKK. I would encourage you to find your stats from the bureau of vital statistics. I would like to remind you of the high percentage of murders and other violent crimes that take place in the United States each year that go unsolved. I would also like for you to remember that a disproportionately large percentage of police officers and teachers are not Black. That having been said, remember Joseph Campbell and the journey of the hero and how people are most likely to huddle around and help there own “type”, people who are most like them. In America we frequently measure “likeness” by color and economics. A lot of people are of the belief that Senator Ted Kennedy is a murderer, but he has money and power, that’s why he’s an elected official instead of on death row. Money is the reason why O.J. Simpson is or rather was a free man. In terms of recent dictators, we need do no more than look at our own chief “elected” official. We are at war killing innocent men women, children and soldiers to literally protect our control of oil, that’s not just liberal rhetoric, Allan Greenspan said that. As far as those dictators emerging from Africa, they were taught this way of ruling by the British,French,Spanish,Portugese, and all others who conquered their continent and divided up with no regard to cultural and natural borders. Lastly Josh, if you have such a disdain for Black people and by transitive property their culture, why are you spending your time on a hip hop site? Remember Remy from “Higher Learning” how he was just looking for a place to fit in, that’s what this reminds me of, smarten up Josh?
On another note the Hip Hop generation and community needs to fight these stereotypes with intelligent speech and education. We also need to supporting this music which degrades women, and glorifies selling drugs.
That’s not to say that there’s anything wrong with someone chronicling their life as a drug dealer, or talking about how someone women do stupid shit, but we all know there’s a difference between “wonda why they call you bitch” and “supersoak that hoe” . I’m not advocating curtailing freedom of speech, self expression is a right, I’m just saying we don’t need to glorify it.
Peace.

As a hiphop head in Scandinavia since mid 90’s (and no we’re not all white up here) I think it’s sad that you all are even having this discussion from this angle. You know damn well Nas isn’t trying to bring the N-word back. Dead that discussion. The real discussion should be how you have managed to turn something once so relevant and powerful into such a disgrace of buttcheeks and ringtones, that Nas is left hanging like this. Yall left Mos Def hangin like a damn fool too, first when he got arrested outside the VMA’s, and then when he tried to get attention to Jena. Anytime an artist goes out on a limb to really make a point, yall are ghost, and everytime someone make a shopping guide with dance instructions in it, yall are bumpin it on your Blackberry’s.

Y’all don’t need to respond to Josh coz its clear as day dude only looks at biased material that supports his claim.
1. The so called statistics are already inaccurate due to the fact that minorities get arrested and convicted for offences which white people receive a caution and face no charges. Eg Jenna 6.
2. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson or 50 Cent, Jay Z, Russell Simmons and Diddy do not speak for the black race they express their own individual opinions on whatever the topic of discussion is.
3.Its common knowledge that police officers racially profile black people and concentrate more on prosecuting them for anything they can think of hence retaliation songs such as ,Fuk the police by NWA, Fight the Power etc.
4.The justice system is more lenient on white people who serve shorter times in prison and come out to re-offend, black people come out and spend the rest of their lives on probation.
6. Lets look at the remark that whites are more intelligent than blacks during slavery black people were not allowed to read or write, yet since the abolition of slavery, we win Nobel Peace Prizes for our contribution to literature, We are the most musical of any race dating back to our ancestors, I mean they used drums etc as a means of communication.
7. In terms of violence white people invaded Africa and partitioned a continent that lived in harmony. They created boundaries and divided a peaceful race creating conflict.
8. If we add up all the crimes commited by the white race, to blacks (slavery, discrimination, segragation, theft of resources and minerals, imprisonment etc) native Americans, Robbed their land and threw them into the reserves, same thing with the Aborigines of Australia, and compare that to the crimes commited by a small section of young black youth in gangs wht your saying doesn’t add up.
A majority of black people who have a light pigmentation blam it on,”I’m Black)
Even though my skins kind of light
That means my ancestors was raped by somebody white
(I’m Black)
Its also common knowledge that black people like coca cola shaped body women who have big bottoms, thick thighs and big breasts and long dark hair which are features not found on the flat bottom, nose job, boob job size 0 other. So your rape stats is fake.
So alot of black kids are born out of wedlock, white people have divorce court on lock.

Damn whattup C. Ronaldo…ain’t see ur name here in a minute…Whattup Daniel (I agree w ur comments as well)
EVERYTHING BELOW DIRECTED TO COMMENT 35:
josh….U IGNORANT SLUT….It’s obvious that ur a complete dumbass whose just spitting a bunch of rhetoric. Any1 can google the “stats” he came up with and see they’re grossly overstated/misconstrued and in some cases just flat out lies.
btw, didn’t a black female in VA just get raped and kipnapped for like a week by a family of [white people]? There goes your “a black woman hasn’t been raped by a white man is over 20 years theory.”
If you don’t like black ppl so much (presumably u don’t like any minority from the way you addressed this site)….WHY ARE U COMMENTING ON A HIP HOP BLOG??? Tell the truth Josh, you’re a Bill O’Reilly intern aren’t you…
Josh remember, after u attend ur Neo Nazi Skin Head meeting later this week, remember to tell all ur ppl’s how u “enlighted” a bunch of [black people] with your “stats”.
You my friend, are a penis with ears (d*ckhead)

I love how they make a montage of the KILL KILL KILL, MURDER MURDER MURDER lyrics and nothing else. Then you have that dumb bitch saying where’s the merit in those lyrics, and “don’t those negative messages cancel out the good ones”.
I’d love to ask them if they feel the Beatles are positive, or if the Grateful Dead are positive, then we can make a montage of lyrics like “drivin the train, high on cocaine” or “i get high with a little help from my friends.” Those are just two examples off the top of my head, I’m sure if I had a staff to go through tons of songs of material I could come up with some better shit.
Granted, these lyrics are fairly tame compared to some of Nas’s, but they are about using drugs, a reflection of the 60s-70s culture at the time – which is exactly what Nas and the rest of hip hop music are doing today.
Fuck off Fox. Ignorant ass motherfuckers.

Mos Def left himself hanging when he didn’t pay child support, and after he did a commercial for an SUV. Didn’t he make a song about global warming?
Big Up to Common and Kanye
Mos Def is a poser.

What’s good circus. I had to fall back for a minute cause the kid trynna get some things done. I was focusing too much on blogs and not enough on getting my game up so I had to take a leave of absence but when I come back I saw this and I had to come in and say something nah mean. I can’t bite my tongue when people like Josh make comments like that.
As far as hip-hop goes, I don’t think hip-hop is in a bad state. Right now the entire industry is hurt. All sales are down of all genres. When hip-hop artists started declining in sales, all artists did. Right now the industry needs a fresh face with a different outlook on life. It’s actually why soulja boy is doing so well in my opinion. There is a need of new artists. All the artists from J. Lo to Jay-z are all the same people that have been doing this since the mid 90’s. Time for new blood. The only thing that hip-hop really needs is open ears to find that talent because most of the people in the game are only in it for themselves and they not trynna help who needs it the most.
@Miss Info…………..wuddup ma. What’s good on that mixtape idea i presented you with a few months back. You have to have some time now.
