As the world continues to mourn the death of Amy Winehouse, the ones closest to her are trying to remember the singer for all the love and joy she brought to their lives. Producer Salaam Remi worked closely with Amy throughout her career and helped VIBE relive his last days with her. With Winehouse being honored on the 16h Annual Juice issue of VIBE Magazine, Remi talked about his time with her in the new issue.
Salaam Remi on his last days with Amy
“I’m in London now. I’m out here because [Amy and I] were supposed to go to a wedding today. And before I could get to her yesterday she passed. We were going to the wedding of Nick Symansky, who is the person who really found her. He found her when he was a scout at 19. And he was the manager before they got the Universal deal.”

They went ahead with the wedding. All I could do was sit there and imagine how many jokes she would have been cracking with me. We were in the middle of working on the album. She finished writing the record. We just hadn’t recorded.
For the last couple of weeks we were video chatting regularly. I was just talking to Nas. Both her and Nas were born on September 14, so we were going to Barbados with all of them for her birthday. She really doesn’t look forward to her birthday, you know what I’m saying?

Great looking cover and I’m looking forward to picking the issue up. However I would be remiss if I didn’t ask, who got kicked off the cover?

Her story is fucked up… She was a beautiful girl and then she got hooked up with a fucking loser who got her hooked on drugs and beat her, was targeted by the horrible UK press that did their best to shame her, got depressed and reckless, she couldnt find her footing and now shes dead… The press beat her ass good… She was only 4-11 and going HAM on the drugs and booze her little frame couldnt keep that up… One bad nigga will fuck a good chick up and vise versa..

Wow Banko, that video is sad and scary. And damn, she was kinda thick back then. She definitely degenerated badly. One thing I will say is that she had style through it all. It’s crazy because I remember when I first heard her on that track with Ghost on it, I was checking for her, and my wife was like “I heard she’s a drug addict anorexic” or some shit. And I was like “damn stop hating!” Come to find out she really was on that shit; she basically was known as a junkie from the go, and even capitalized off it with “Rehab.” It’s sad to see that it ended like this though. I feel what your saying about the various people that brought her down: the press, blake, etc., but she as an individual bears a large amount of responsibility too. Still, RIP to her…
