American Music Awards recap: Jay-Z’s subliminal message to 50 Cent? (Plus J.Lo’s slip, and Adam Lambert)

The best performance of the AMAs was Lady Gaga’s flaming piano in a box, in my humble opinion. Worst? That was probably a tie between Shakira’s drumline, Rihanna’s wooden, Jeezy-less “Hard,” and Fergie’s sour notes.
But while the core AMA viewership was probably still giddy about all of Taylor Swift’s wins….hip hop fans were debating Hov’s very deliberate Favorite Rap Artist acceptance speech…
Which ended with: “Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t,” and a sardonic laugh.
Now I’m pretty sure Hov has repeated his line at other award shows…but is this a jab at 50’s <200k first week sales projections?
After the jump…the other “big” moment of the AMA’s was when Jennifer Lopez was dancing and slipped and fell for a split second. So friggin’ what.
I also don’t get why this guy is such a big deal…He’s got a notable look, I like the glam rock image. But this was meh…even with his simulated fellatio act.

Last Night I saw a very odd couple at the laker game… It was Drake, Jimmy Ivoine and Jay Z all buddy buddy very weird!!
I knew the fix was in on 50’s record when there was no day one stat from itunes like there was for Eminem and Jazzy album.. Or after a week of being number one on itunes there was still no stats for how it had been performing.. I remember seeing the ituns comment section that first night the album was released and there was more than 46,000 comments so someone wants me to believe that thats all it sold on itunes in a full week? I’m not buying that!
What Interscope and Ivoine are forgetting is that the numbers aren’t what make 50 relevant but they are what makes Jazzy relevant that and Beyonce… They can fiddle with 50’s numbers but they cant stop him from being famous.. So if I were 50 I would do the things I know they couldn’t stop me from doing like Tour year round, Spend 11 months collecting preorders and create a list of locations the album will be sold at across the country!
More than Jimmy fiddling with the numbers and interscope repeatedly playing 50 people couldn’t find a location to buy it at!!!
There is nothing but good that can come from this.. The most important thing is that 50 will stop trying to please everyone! Because its impossible to do that. The Massacre would have been a 12-15 song classic had he not try to put a song on there for everyone and kept Westside Story, How We Do, and Hate It Or Love It for his self.. But he was too busy trying to please every fan with 22 cuts and Dre by helping hurricane lame! Curtis was a solid album he just abandoned that shit too fast after the whole Kanye thing he should have put out 9 single at least off that album! I hope he rides this album all the way out trooper this shit!!

Info, why is there 3 sets of sales numbers for 50’s album floating around? One set is 150-160k the other is 200k and now if you google it there are sites saying AS OF TODAY 50 HAS SOLD 537K COPIES OF B.I.S.D. WITH 1 DAY LEFT UNTIL HIS 1ST WEEK SALES ENDS, 50 DID 377K IN STORES 160K ONLINE DIGITAL SALES.
So what men and woman are pushing this lie?

This basically just means the album “actually” sold less than 160K in the “actual” 1st week.. and they’re juking the stats. Although I don’t personally believe Jimmy is purposefully crippling the sales, I bet 50 will blame it on him. He will do everything but take the blame for it.. watch and see.

I caught the last 20 minutes of the show; forgot it was on. Jay’s comment was aimed at 50, I thot. And Adam Lambert was wooden (absolutely no pun intended). I think they’re trying to market this guy as bisexual, what with the Details shoot where he kissed a girl and the performance last night. His performance was stupid and stiff. I think Taylor should give Kanye a call to say thanks cuz he brightened her star.

I love 50 and Adam so i will say…not to make excuses but i am…lol. When 50 wasn’t being seen or heard, ppl were wanting/needing to hear music from him…so from the hiatus of CURTIS til now making the mixtapes might have hurt him by being slightly over saturated so when BISD came out ppl weren’t as excited for the anticipation.
And I cant help it, on a human level, I think 50 will always will be #1 because of how you see him appreciate his fans (free concerts.appearances)…cant say the same for J. I could not believe how semi-transparent he was this past Fall with his media blitz trying to generate interest in his album. That was so obvious from someone who is usually 95% tight lipped. Were as 50 has always been candid.
Adam’s song choice was ehhh. But if you look back at his AI days, he has a crazy range…even with Smokey Robinson songs.

Although if anyone has made “numbers” a reverence point in the past decade it’s been 50. And his, new artistic appreciation tone that he had in that BET link is a lil humorous because as 50 himself said of other artists. “If you really made that music for the love or the art you bring it away for free or keep it for yourself.” He’s a smart guy but every so often all the “actual material”, “actual projects”, “aggressive content” and various “spaces” he’s in sounds like pure static to avoid the real truth of a lackluster release.

I thought BP3’s sales would be low too since he’s not on Def Jam anymore, but how do you explain 475K in the 1st week without them? I also thought for sure 50 would sell more than Jay, but he’s gonna sell 1/3 of what Jay did. 50’s not even gonna get to platinum status with a 1st week that low.. SMH.

I’ve been a fan of both of these guys since the mid 90’s. Jay is the master at subliminals and 50 is the master of direct disses. That was definitely aimed at Fif, there is no doubt about it. You obviously know nothing about the music business or about how things work. First off, BP3 wasn’t even on Def Jam. It was distributed by Warner. Secondly, if Jay really sells no records, then how can you explain his tours being sold out nationally and internationally?
How can you explain the success he sees in his other business ventures? It all stems from him being successful with the music. Lastly, in today’s music market, most artists see an 75% – 85% drop in sales. Jay only saw a 55% decrease because people believe in his bodies of work. In a market where most albums have 1-3 good songs on it, people know when a Jay record drops, you’re probably going to get a good project. The same goes for artists like Maxwell, Musiq Souldchild, Robin Thicke, Green Day, U2, Madonna, Toby Keith, etc… This is the reason people are willing to invest in these artist, because they put out good projects. Know what you’re talking about before posting on message boards, it makes you look bad young scrap. One.

Career comparisons of these 2, at least by “fans” is never balanced. Much like the differences in different eras of sports, The hip hop climate and business were completely different when Jay came in the door vs. when 50 finally arrived.
Plus people seem to overlook the yrs 50 spent prior to Em and Dre cosigning him. If you do the math 50 and Jay aren’t really that far apart time wise.

Tru story, when you talk about numbers 50 wins that debate. He has sold 30 million records with 4 albums. Can’t hate there. In The Club, PIMP, Candy Shop, Disco Inferno, and Hate It Or Love It were all #1 singles. What he has done in the ammount of time vs Jay is incredible. Although, I do think what Jay has done is more difficult. The hardest thing to do in the music business is to stay around. Jay’s longevity at the level he’s at is the hardest thing to do, especially in Hip Hop. If 50 could stay at that GRODT/Massacre level for 10 years, then he i’ll hear the argument that he’s messing with Jay.

Why is every one bringing up 50 past record sales…if you really want to be honest about 50 Cent sales the truth is they have been DECLINING since GRDT to BISD…50 album sales have been on the down slop! Jay-z album sales have been consistant! The last G-unit album should have been a sign to the 50 cent stans that his appeal was at a low…TOS sold less than 95k first week and has yet to go GOLD! So who cares what you sold at the peek of your career…is 50 cent still going diamond HELL NO!!! I think everyone is in 50’s ass about sales cuz that’s ALL he’d ever say to justify himself in previous situations. Fat Joe, Ja Rule, D-Block…he consistently put their numbers vs his own in instead of the creative quality of the music.
He says he can’t make the music or take the chances Kaye does but that’s of his own doing. 50 has made great songs but overall he’s pretty 1 dimensional.

Jay’s a very smart business man and has been a great rapper, but I have to call a spade a spade. People crucify 50 and says 50 does anything to sell albums and get publicity, but Jay does anything to get publicity as well, but no one seems to notice Jay’s antics or is just not willing to call him out on it. Jay Z stays hot because he always puts himself beside whoever is hot at the moment. Here are a few examples. A few years ago when he was on his mixtap tear Wayne called Jay out and told him in so many words that he was no longer the best rapper and alive and that he would eat him lyrically. So what does Jay do? He sees the writing on the wall and goes and makes a song with Wayne and claim he is passing the torch. Jay did not start co-signing the greatness of Kanye until Kanye made himself hot thorough his own grind. Another example is the American Gangster movie. Jay gets killed by critics and fans with that Kingdom Come album. So what does he do for his next album to create hype? He sees an advanced pre-screening of a movie called American Gangster, goes of and makes an album and gives his album the same name as the movie to make it look as if his album is linked with a movie called American Gangster and many people not realizing it goes out and by the album because they believe it’s the soundtrack for a classic movie. Talk about benefiting off of someones else’s promotion and buzz. Another example is the current buzz from Drake. Beans shows up at show in Philly and Jay acknowledges Beans and then goes and gets the flashlight cops to throw him out of the arena, but 3 days later he goes to Canada to perform and brings Drake out with him to perform a song that Jay was not even on. I bet you if Beans had a hot single out at the moment or was on MTVs top ten hottest MCs Jay would have invited him onstage to rap with him. But Jay knew he did that man wrong that’s why get him kicked out of the arena. Same thing with the Yankees. The Yankees have been winning all year long. So what’s the next best thing to do for Jay? Make a song about New York and also link it to the New York Yankees. By the way if you take Alicia Keys off the hook that song is average at best. Even Jigga stans not just Fans but stans have to admit Alicia Keys makes that song hot. Same thing with the Rihanna and Chris Brown incident. Since the Chris Brown incident anything Rihanna does these days she gets mad attention so what does Jay do? He goes and put her and Kanye on his only real other relevant single off of his album. Even on that single Kanye outshines him in my opinion. Yeah Jay thought that his second single Death of Autotune would make its mark because every 1 was kind of getting tired of it, but that single was a flop just like his first single Jocking Jay Z. Another example is the swagger like us remix with the 3 hottest rappers at the time TI, Wayne, and Kanye. Another example of Jay standing next to whoever is hot is him running around the world with the Kid from Coldplay Chris Martin and hopping on state when Chris performs to get that residual shine from Chris Fans. Now I know Chris and Jay did a song together in the past, but so did Jay and Beans and so did Jay other members of State property who Jay refused to do a video with his last album. Why not go out and support them when they perform on stage and / or put an album Jay. Is it because they were no longer hot enough for you to shine. Another example is Jay marrying Bee. I’m not saying Jay don’t love Bee but he shows no pride what so ever when talking about her or more appropriately refusing to acknowledge her, but you know deep down he just loves all the residual shine that comes his way by way of being married to her. Anytime any mentions Bee name comes up in any conversation anywhere in the world Jay knows his name will come up in the conversation at some point because he is linked to her. I would not be surprised if Jay only married Bee for Business reasons and Bee probably has no ideal. Same thing with him using Lebron James and so forth. If Lebron was some bum cat coming off the bench Jay would not even acknowledge him? Kind of like those New Jersey Net players who you never see him with or acknowledging although he has minority ownership stake in the team. I can just see Jigga every night just plotting away and thinking who next can I stand next to that is hot so I can get some of that residual shine and keep my name in people’s mouth. What ever the next biggest thing is you can be sure to find Jay Z standing next to it. God Forbid the New York Giants or Jets make it to the superbowl. That empire state of mind Song will surely be song at halftime or before the game starts. I said all that just to say this people. Jay has been a great rapper and is one of the greatest rappers of all time no doubt. So he does deserve a lot of credit. Hey 11 number 1 albums and his ability to stay relevant in an industry that has very short shelf life is very commendable to say the least. But it is beyond me why people give him a free pass on everything and can’t see that he is just as much a media whore as the kids from the MTV show the hills (Spencer and Heidi). Hey don’t front even if you never seen the show i’m sure you know who both of these clowns are.
Me personally I prefer the Jay from the 96 – 03 era over this version of Jay. At this point currently the 06 – 09 version of Jay is a much better business man and self promoter than he is an artist who depends on other entertainers shine to stay hot, but no one seems to notice it or are just (die hard Jigga Stans). Who do not want to acknowledge that the current version of Jay Z is living off others peoples shine and his past self proclaimed greatest rapper alive glory. Before I start getting hated on by some of you Jigga Stans (not just fans)but stans for this long post riddle me this people. When was the last time Jay had great single out by himself since the black album that made you say damn that’s hot. Ok I’m waiting (Crickets). By the way I said hot single not a song where he spits a hot line or two or a luke warm single like rock boys that was good but nowhere near great. @ Jigga Stans No harm no foul not hating just calling a spade a spade.

The difference between 50 and Jay’s promotion antics is ppl are starting to get tired of 50 literrally shitting on other artists to make himself look bigger. He constantly brings up and explains why he’s better than (insert rappers name). Jay just makes moves. He doesn’t talk about them as much, nor does he down other artists as harsh, or blatant as 50 does. Not to say that Jay is perfect because no man under God’s sun is, i’m just pointing out differences. Jay has since day 1 put himself next to the “hot” artist to shine. My question to you is, what’s wrong with that? It’s not like Jay puts out mediocre material then puts Rhianna on it to make it a hit. Jay has made countless hits by himself and the last two singles that come to mind that were dope that he did by himself was DOA (2009), and Roc Boys (2007), Show Me What You Got (2006), and Blue Magic (2006). You speak some truth no doubt, but I still don’t understand why it’s a problem?

Look, truthfully i’ve never seen Def Jam books or know whethter or not he used their whole budget for his album. I do know this, the Budweiser promo was an endorsement deal that he got paid for, those were not Def Jam marketing dollars. Jay just scored his 1st #1 single with Empire State Of Mind. As far as DOA, of course I though that shit was hot. It had all of Hip Hop talking about it, got T-Pain and a bunch of other artists pissed off about it, and from then on, have you heard a bunch of records with autotune on them? Nah! As far as the Alicia thing, it’s not like she was super hot when Jay put her on that record. Actually, that record got her hot and heated things up for her new album. As far as Rhianna, Jay signed Rhianna so it’s only right that when she got in a position to repay him for what he did for her, she does. I still don’t see what’s wrong with what he’s doing? Frankly I could care less what any rappers sell these days, cause honestly, Def Jam buys albums, they bought Kanye, they buy Jays shit, when Jay was the pres he used all the money to market himself.
But I could care less about sales, I care about the music and honestly, this BISD album is dope as fuck. It drifts off toward the end, but the first 10 or so songs are crack.
Crimewave, Stretch, Strong Enough, So Disrespectful, Psycho etc.
Album is dope, the movie is actually much better than I thought it would be and it came with a JMJ doc, for 15 bucks.

But honestly, he isnt as big as he was years ago, but his album did leak a month early, that doesnt happen to artists that much.
Normally its a week or two max, his shit was out three weeks before it was in stores.
It leaked before his Baby By Me video was out, they pushed the album up a week, and alot of people dont know about it. I aint see any commercials for his album.
But I called Best Buy on Tues 17th, asking about the deluxe edition, the chick told me the computer said the album dont come out till next week, I told her it leaked and was pushed up, she said he is a big artist it would be in my dailies on the computer or some shit, I told her shit is out, she kept telling me it wasnt out till Nov 23rd.
She said I had to order the deluxe edition online.
Target said the same shit about the album not being out till 23rd.
So either they didnt know the shit was on the shelf or the computers were wrong or these stores in NJ werent selling his album this past week.
Now you cant say that doesnt fuck his sales up. People telling costumers that the album aint out yet, so month early leak, stores not selling it.
That has to play into his sales.
Not saying he would have sold 700k or nothing if everything was fine. But figure 300k plus he probably would have sold.
Anyway, I know peopel will dig at him on this shit cause he talked about sales so much, when he was selling millions, so now its time for others to stab him up on his low sales.
But frankly, I care about the music, and BISD was a dope album, the movie was dope and the JMJ doc was really well done.
Overall a great album, imo the best album of the year so far. Better than relapse and BP3
