lol. interjecting myself into this heated battle because i want to get at the emo part…which isn’t wrong at all because i think that’s what he set out to do (it was one of his starting talking points when he started writing)…but emo has such a negative connotation to it especially when it’s related to indie and new music and those rockers…but like queen latifah was saying at the bet awards after show…which kind of made me laugh. she was saying she hasn’t heard someone like drake in a long time/ever…someone who can rap and sing, and be in the pocket all the time and then went on about his lyrical abilities…and uhm as much as i love her i couldn’t help but laugh cause i was like who feeds people this sh*t. i mean does she not listen to any new music at all. she’s a freaken artist…but she hasn’t come accross anyone who can sing and rap…i mean is drake unique. dude. i don’t even have to be an idiot to find falsehoods with what she was saying. i think she had stars in her eyes. i was a bit surprised cause i thought she was smarter than that. meh.
also stake although lame made me laugh because it’s completely apt for this situation. lol. it’s official.
also i am female, (note how i did talk about how buddy has a built in female fanbase because of his looks…and even stupid degrassi), and i don’t like drake the artist, what’s his name on degrassi-jimmy? aubrey the actor, aubrey the dude people think is the hottest thing since sliced bread-please, but i do like the dude aubrey. like spexxx says we gotta support da ting to run da ting. you don’t only have to be from tdot to like the kid yo. lol. he’s not even that big here…except so many people trying to get on his train. i’m sure people in toronto know about degrassi…and maybe know about aubrey but they haven’t made the drake connection. it’s just starting. good on whoever started the rihanna rumour. lol.
OMG i can’t !! LMAO!! but seriously on drakes freestyle…pre-written rhymes!!?? this is the future of hiphop i guess, its a joke. bet flex was baffled by the blackberry scrolling.
I feel old because everytime someone reads the word “freestyle” on something, these kids expect it to be off the top. I’ve been listening to rap long enough to know that freestyling is a dying art and nobody really does it anymore. I remember when Biggie was spitting “freestyles” when they were really just pre-written rhymes. He recited his “freestyles” on different stations and nobody said a thing because he was so loved. So I can only assume that people who don’t like Drake reading off his phone are just plain haters.
Now I don’t like Drake cuz I don’t think he’s that nice. His flow and style of rhyming sounds just like Kanye West to me. And I can only tolerate that style from Kanye, lol. But seriously, just cause it says “freestyle” does NOT mean it’s off the top. Not in these times, anyway.
actually a freestyle is also a song with really no subject like on mixtapes. i think they changed the meaning somewhere along the way of hip hop’s slow death.
T-Pain + Lil Wayne + Kanye West – Kanye’s lyrical ability + the promotion that Lupe Fiasco should be getting + Jamie Foxx/Hollywood d!#$ riding him + Chris Brown’s old fan base(that includes Rihanna) – Chris Browns talent($#!+ I’ve even heard Chris freestyle!) = a very over hyped and overrated MC known as Aubrey “Drake” Graham.
Can someone please answer this question for me? If the kid ain’t even a ‘tried and true’ MC, then wtf is his purpose in Hip Hop?
Reakwon said it best: “this the middle weights, this the lightweights, and this is the HEAVYWEIGHTS… it’s about balance.”
I’m not saying the man can’t eat BUT why we gotta make this dude out to be something that he’s CLEARLY clearly NOT?!
okay okay okay. i agree with you 100% but i feel it is my duty to defend the kid. you don’t know how hard it is to do what he’s done so far (even if industry wise/in the game/as a rapper/as an artist) he hasn’t done much, but i mean in terms of recognition. it’s really hard to be non american and make it in america…it just doesn’t work, especially if you are canadian. aubrey isn’t professing to be anything. anyone who knows him knows about where he wants to be…even if he’s a real quiet/holds his cards close kind of dude. it’s been some of the people aroud him, some who have been helping him and some just basically jumping on band wagon who are trying to make him into something he’s not. he’s a good dude…and i hope he can keep his ego in check through all of this. like i said before in another drake thread…this kid may be new to you, and even to some canadians, but definately not to anyone in the tdot who is a fan of hip hop and has been watching this kid make moves prior to leaving degrassi and then after. out of all from tdot who’ve been trying to get ahead…he’s one of the only dudes who’s been working non stop and actually listening to feedback trying to correct himself. it also helps that he has a built in girl fanbase factor because of his “looks”…but he’s not the first and he won’t be the last.
I feel what ur saying. I’m more or less just annoyed by the way some people in Hip Hop and R&B have been promoting this dude to be the next best thing since the Wii. Yet every time I see this guy on camera I feel a bit embarrassed for even watching him. I’m talking live, filmed, w/e!
BET Awards, ‘Best I Ever Had’ video, Conan O’Brien performance, live concerts, now this! Someone needs to tell him to stop making public appearances.
He has MORE personality in his voice than his entire anatomy. He’s corny and frankly NOT built for this Rap $#!+.
It’s hard to make it in America because SOMETIMES… maybe… just maybe… You have to be COMPLETELY talented to make it. I’m tired of these Britney Spears @$$ MC’s getting paid(aka Flo-Rida).
He’s more of a dude you hear and listen to every once and a while. Why not just become a ghost writer? That might be his best move. Not everyone is built to be a performer. Feel me?
lol. i get what you’re saying and i would say the exact same thing. i don’t understand people who actually pay to go see him…i mean i know people who know him (lol. what’s the three degrees of seperation thing. i’m friends with people who are friends with aubrey is what i meant)and i mean i support my people, so i would stan for him but i’m telling you i wouldn’t go and see him perform. he’s not that dude. you don’t even want to see him when he was lol brand new because the dudes in the game in toronto were like what is this pretty boy trying to do, but he got it done. i mean he got what he wanted. he’s getting better…even his front/facade is getting better. i just think it takes some time and he’ll get there…maybe time won’t be on his side, but i think his mind and his ear is pretty sharp musically. he’s no prodigy or nothing and people trying to make it seem like he’s the second coming or the future or whatever and if that’s true then i am more scared for the future hearing that than i am right now. now everyone is trying to get at him…lol, which is pretty funny because these are the same people who didn’t give this kid no shine/time when he said before he left degrassi that i want to be a musician, specifically i want to be rapper and i’m going to make it happen. the dude always had his priorities and it’s good to see a another young kid from the dot make it somewhere…even if it proves to be fruitless or a deadend. i mean i remember him coming on the hip hop show on the radio and the dudes would always say GO TO THESE NETWORKING EVENTS AND HAND OUT YOUR MIXTAPE, and anything else you have to give out because you just want to introduce yourself to people…don’t charge at first because you’re new…make sure your package is tip top form and go to the record companies and radio stations and drop them off…make sure you’re doing good business with the promoters, etc…and it seemed like aubrey was the only one listening to all this taking it real seriously. granted lol his deal and management came fater than you can say holla, but he did it ALL BY HIMSELF. he made connection mostly all by himself. good for him. like i said i would stan for the dude but i wouldn’t pay to go and see him. i’ll just do what i do and give some money to his future, but no way on the performance tip. i guess that means i’m a hater or something when i clearly am not.
mertz Reply: July 22nd, 2009 at 6:00 pm
lets also talk about how this kid writes his own shit. lets also talk about how he clearly is biting off some people…but what’s he supposed to do…he’s trying to create a niche for himself/be himself but if that was true lol jdiggz would have a worldwide record deal and be bigger than he is. so okay he’s a fraud or whatever people want to say…uhm people need to know that he hasn’t been doing this for a long time. the dude doesn’t come from a hood or live on a block. his life is different from the rest of us youngins/the average rapper. he’s an actor and you would thing it would be easy being a preformer, but the transition isn’t that easy. anyways so i just wish him luck and good fortune. once again good for him. get ‘em aubrey.
mr_wayne Reply: July 22nd, 2009 at 8:27 pm
I understand what you mean. Like I was trying to say is basically he DOES NOT deserve the hype he’s getting. Ur mostly saying that you know he’s worked hard to get where he’s at. Only because I believe what you say. I feel you and I respect that much from him.
Being an MC that garners the kind of attention, props, hype, etc. that he has received… would be the sort of MC such as Lupe Fiasco. Lupe is a TRUE MC to the fullest, right down to his STAGE PERFORMANCE and his MERE PRESENCE.
Like I said though. I understand what ur trying to say. I respect that.
mertz Reply: July 23rd, 2009 at 1:01 pm
hhahhaha. sorry to be so confusing. i was saying aubrey is new at this. he’s not a performer…you would think being an actor would atleast ease his transition to being a rapper/musician, on stage, doing promotions, etc…but one doesn’t make the other. he’s not really that kind of dude. he’s definately a work in progress, and i agree with you about the hype. i mean no matter how we were with him day 1 and no matter how he and some people we know think this hype is okay…the reality is that it’s not, but that’s the business. i agree with you about lupe though. i don’t know what’s going on with him and who’s trying to do him dirty but i hope he knows that he has fans out there and that he can really do something for music. meh.
Temple of hip hop on the krs-1 cd u put in the computer said “a freestyle is a rhyme that is spit that has never been herd by anyone before.” Check the facts. When the hype man finishes the line it must not be a real freestyle.
lol. aubrey…this isn’t your first time on the radio. lol. but i guess because it’s your american radio introduction you probably was really feeling it. lol. and he’s right though. toronto people trying to get on this kid now but where were they when he was saying 2 years before he left degrassi that he wanted to be a writer, a rapper, a musician, a producer…how come all the aubrey fans don’t know he always wanted to do music before acting. lol. and where were they when he was dropping demo’s, mixtapes, everything he could to people trying to get interest. good for him though cause everything was relatively easy for him and he had people who always knew what he could do. good for trey songz being a friend and allowing the kid to do features as well as singing his songs ;P. toronto=screwface capital of the world. i’ma watch affion spoof this. i’m sure it’ll be funny. loving the brows.
Yooo that s**t had me dyyyyiiiinnng! LOL n I dont really think da blackberry part was annoying…it was that he would spit 8 or 9 bars of complete bulls**t then start talkin dumb s**t and then he was damn near apologizing!!!
I’ve been saying aubrey is a fraud, and its not based on the blackberry alone, him and wayne obviously have the same writer or share work.. hip hop in general is backwards, lets see… u can be gay or bi whatever wayne is and its ok.. u can have a history of working for law enforcement like william and its ok you can wear tighter jeans than ya girl and compete with her for the best pocketbook… those are things that has generally been frowned upon in the game but i guess the labels push whatever is clicking now a days
I don’t see what the fuss is about. Do you really think most rappers don’t have note pads in front of them when recording their mix tape “freestyles”? I’ve heard rappers say it’s a freestyle then used the same rhymes in another freestyle, freestyles that then became songs and freestyles with the same rhymes from songs they’ve already released (Cam, Kanye). Not all freestyles are straight off the top (as much as we would like them to be). There’s even a video on this site of Jay-Z free styling his new song…which I would have thought was more him spitting a few bars capella…but it could be called a freestyle because no ones heard the actual song.
If no one has a problem with Wayne using one of Drakes verses or everyone borrowing (biting?) Big/ Jay/ Pac/ Em’s old rhymes how can you have a problem with whether a guy is free styling or not?
how is a true freestyle when he says it’s off the new record?
i understand you though. there are many forms of freestyle and what it is to me may not be the same for you because it is all relative.
i always thought it meant off the top of your head…but i also understand that some people write down their lyrics and recite them and spit them…and do you call those songs/raps/what? does a freestyle have to be complete?
lol. a pen to a paper or your brain to your mouth to vocals/speech.
i don’t have a problem with this much…the bb is the new version of paper to a pen. i think people are combining his lack of performance with his ability to write lyrics and his actual personal presence/persona/personality.
i get what you mean about freestyles and they should be off the top. just seems people use any excuse to hate on him and call him for things that other rappers get a pass for.
He never said that it was a freestyle…so I don’t know why everyone is gettin all bent outta shape because he spit somethin written.
The kidd is young jus comin in the game, and he’s still learnin how to flow, stop tryin to find reasons to hate!!!
I ain’t really trippin on him reading off his blackberry. I can remember when Biggie was promoting “Life After Death” and he was so-called freestyling on radio stations. One of his freestyles actually ended up coming from Niggas Bleed, but at the time you didn’t know it. My point is, nobody truly freestyles anymore. I just hope he puts out a solid album. He definitely has the talent. Peace……………..

also i am female, (note how i did talk about how buddy has a built in female fanbase because of his looks…and even stupid degrassi), and i don’t like drake the artist, what’s his name on degrassi-jimmy? aubrey the actor, aubrey the dude people think is the hottest thing since sliced bread-please, but i do like the dude aubrey. like spexxx says we gotta support da ting to run da ting. you don’t only have to be from tdot to like the kid yo. lol. he’s not even that big here…except so many people trying to get on his train. i’m sure people in toronto know about degrassi…and maybe know about aubrey but they haven’t made the drake connection. it’s just starting. good on whoever started the rihanna rumour. lol.

Feel me?

lol. i get what you’re saying and i would say the exact same thing. i don’t understand people who actually pay to go see him…i mean i know people who know him (lol. what’s the three degrees of seperation thing. i’m friends with people who are friends with aubrey is what i meant)and i mean i support my people, so i would stan for him but i’m telling you i wouldn’t go and see him perform. he’s not that dude. you don’t even want to see him when he was lol brand new because the dudes in the game in toronto were like what is this pretty boy trying to do, but he got it done. i mean he got what he wanted. he’s getting better…even his front/facade is getting better. i just think it takes some time and he’ll get there…maybe time won’t be on his side, but i think his mind and his ear is pretty sharp musically. he’s no prodigy or nothing and people trying to make it seem like he’s the second coming or the future or whatever and if that’s true then i am more scared for the future hearing that than i am right now. now everyone is trying to get at him…lol, which is pretty funny because these are the same people who didn’t give this kid no shine/time when he said before he left degrassi that i want to be a musician, specifically i want to be rapper and i’m going to make it happen. the dude always had his priorities and it’s good to see a another young kid from the dot make it somewhere…even if it proves to be fruitless or a deadend. i mean i remember him coming on the hip hop show on the radio and the dudes would always say GO TO THESE NETWORKING EVENTS AND HAND OUT YOUR MIXTAPE, and anything else you have to give out because you just want to introduce yourself to people…don’t charge at first because you’re new…make sure your package is tip top form and go to the record companies and radio stations and drop them off…make sure you’re doing good business with the promoters, etc…and it seemed like aubrey was the only one listening to all this taking it real seriously. granted lol his deal and management came fater than you can say holla, but he did it ALL BY HIMSELF. he made connection mostly all by himself. good for him. like i said i would stan for the dude but i wouldn’t pay to go and see him. i’ll just do what i do and give some money to his future, but no way on the performance tip. i guess that means i’m a hater or something when i clearly am not.

lets also talk about how this kid writes his own shit. lets also talk about how he clearly is biting off some people…but what’s he supposed to do…he’s trying to create a niche for himself/be himself but if that was true lol jdiggz would have a worldwide record deal and be bigger than he is. so okay he’s a fraud or whatever people want to say…uhm people need to know that he hasn’t been doing this for a long time. the dude doesn’t come from a hood or live on a block. his life is different from the rest of us youngins/the average rapper. he’s an actor and you would thing it would be easy being a preformer, but the transition isn’t that easy. anyways so i just wish him luck and good fortune. once again good for him. get ‘em aubrey.

I respect that.

hhahhaha. sorry to be so confusing. i was saying aubrey is new at this. he’s not a performer…you would think being an actor would atleast ease his transition to being a rapper/musician, on stage, doing promotions, etc…but one doesn’t make the other. he’s not really that kind of dude. he’s definately a work in progress, and i agree with you about the hype. i mean no matter how we were with him day 1 and no matter how he and some people we know think this hype is okay…the reality is that it’s not, but that’s the business. i agree with you about lupe though. i don’t know what’s going on with him and who’s trying to do him dirty but i hope he knows that he has fans out there and that he can really do something for music.
