(A$AP Rocky introduces “Get Lit” at his NYC listening session)
Last night, A$AP Rocky gave journalists their first listen to his debut mixtape, Live.Love.A$AP. The last minute session was your typical rap listening: chicken wings, booze and tons of weed smoke. However, the music that the young Harlemite introduced was definitely a new wave. I’ve been thinking about how I’m going to describe it and I can only say it’s “Harlem Trill.” The beats are slowed down and spacey but everything about Rocky screams New York. It just oozes out of him. You’ll see what I mean on Halloween, when the mixtape drops. For now, here’s a clip of Rocky introducing his favorite cut from Live.Love.A$AP.

I’ve lived in the Bronx my whole life and I’ve never seen Swishers for sale. He’s riding the south hard.

harlem trill, huh? i don’t know…on the one hand that sounds kinda corny, but on the other hand i kinda dig it.
i definitely think it’s really interesting to see some NY cats doing down south music. that’s something i’ve always thought about and been interested in seeing for at least the last 15 or so years.
and i don’t mean the typical, “we got a down south joint for all my south niggas”. i’m talking about actually DOING down south music and not feeling a way, or being self-conscious, or making a big deal about it.
as hip hop was born in nyc, it goes without saying that it influenced all hip hop created in other regions. the influence was more evident when i was growing up, but less so as hip hop got more regionally divisive (coinciding with the west and the south rising to prominence). i think it’s cool to see the south have such a direct influence on cats from ny.
anyway, i hope it’s not just a trend. niggas should be able to make any kind of music they want to make, irrespective of where they live.

It sounds good to me. Some of the lyrics sound chopped n’ screwed…that Texas style. There is nothing wrong with having a southern influence in your music. I am looking forward to hearing the rest of this mixtape.

The fact that he didn’t mention Jordans in his top favorite sneakers shows that he thinks out the box. Any other NY dude would of said every typical sneaker out there (jordans, vans, etc). And the fact that he has a southern influence in his music when he’s from NY is dope as fuck to me.
