A$AP Rocky Explains His Multi-Million Dollar Deal: ‘I Don’t Have $3 Mill In My Account’
Posted by Mikey Fresh under quotes[25] Comments
So it seems like a lot of folks were really thrown off and skeptical about A$AP’s reported $3 Million dollar deal with Polo Grounds/RCA. I think people thought he got a $ 3 milli advance. Well, he recently broke it down with Billboard’s The Juice.
The $3 million deal is between Polo Grounds/RCA and A$AP’s company, A$AP Worldwide. Under the agreement, the rapper’s first two releases are “Live Love A$AP” and a full-length album slated to drop at the top of the year. In keeping with the rapper’s independent spirit, he can also continue to release mixtapes through RED Distribution.
“I don’t have a $3 million dollar balance in my account but the record deal was $3 million though,” A$AP tells Billboard. “I got a deal with RCA/Polo Grounds for A$AP Worldwide and I got a deal with them for my solo project, my solo deal; if you combine both deals it amounts to a three million dollar deal.”
Rocky also plans to repackage his LiveLoveA$AP mixtape for sale in stores and is currently working on a A$AP crew compilation and full length solo LP. But where is that “Purple Swag” remix??

I actually like this… I don’t think I have consciously listened to this guy’s music. But this is like against every other rappers principals. Some one like Jim Jones would had made us believe like get got a check for 3 mills. In a way this is refreshing.

i strongly disagree. what would’ve been refreshing would’ve been either not talking about it at all or clearing up any misconceptions out the gate.
anyone who knows anything about the current music industry and/or who is not a complete and utter moron knows that dude didn’t get (anywhere near) three mil.
it seems to me as if he’s trying to clear it up now because he’s most likely being called out on the bullshit.
“A$AP Rocky: About three million dollars. [Other rappers who don't sign] are smart, but I feel like Sony/RCA is a family and the people there actually care about me. When I came to meet [Polo Grounds Music founder] Bryan Leach, I got to know him on a personal level– he would set up car service for me to go to other labels. He wanted to see me make it. He’s from Harlem.
I’m going to have creative control; there’s no bullshit. The situation is almost unrealistic. I mean, five months ago I had about $3,000 in my bank account. Now I’m worth $3 million. Nobody’s gotten a deal like that since 50 Cent.”
you can tell from the foregoing quote (from the pitchfork interview) that this dude is kinda clueless about the game.
i recently took a class with a prominent music biz attorney here in atlanta who’s worked with every major artist out of atlanta over the past 15 or so years, and from what we learned in class no NEW artist from ANY genre is seeing numbers like that these days, least of all a hip-hop artist who hasn’t even sold record 1.
i’d wager his advance wasn’t even anywhere near $250k. and what the deal is “worth” is pretty much irrelevant because 9.9 out of 10 times an artist will never come close to getting what the deal is so-called worth.
intentional misinformation like this is part of the reason people (including those in the biz) are so ignorant about the music game and how it works.
fuck outta here!

I’m not sure if you rant is geared towards me and if its purpose was to set up the fact that you “to class with a prominent business attorney. But I do commend the fact that you wrote out a thought out answer. As i often do. If it was towards me “i love the fact that i inspired you to write this post” if it wasn’t, if it was just a rant. That’s cool too. We need more people like you in the Internets that can write out well thought out comments. Personally I strive to do that when I have the time.
But I just made a point about one thing. I do thing all you say was true. I actually completely agree with you. But my point was that some other rapper would have come out and said “I just got a 3 million dollar check”… look at me, look at my car, nigga i’m doing it big. Type of stuff. I’m actually very familiar with this type of contracts as I have audited royalty contracts in the past. For two notable rappers out there and many old school dudes that want to get more money for their music that was sampled or want to know if they are getting the fair share. (There is my plug, btw).
But hey, you could’ve just been ranting on my post for no reason and I could have not been driving towards me. That’s cool.
But i digress.
I’m just happy miss info agree with me. That made my day. Thanks Miss Info. I don’t have a crush on you, but I think I should. I respect your work and I respect the integrity in it. That’s why I keep coming back. If there is such a thing as “tone at the top” this site has it. In many aspects I think it takes ofter your personality.
Have a good weekend everybody. Off to dinner now.

Oh you mean like that$9 per album stuff Koch had people reciting a few years ago?
Truthfully I feel the next man’s money isn’t my business. It’s kinda sad to me that he has to speak on the financial details of his deal. In fact I dont think it’s needed for the labels to make the dollar amount known to us either.

Don’t know about KOCH currently. I do know that the higher $ per album sold was off set by limited marketing and promo funds soooo it all balanced out.

Boys, I remember one year Koch artists were on Angie Martinez’s show bragging about making $20 per every dollar of each Cd sold. Jim Jones, Cam, Prodigy, Sheek = GUILTY of this trend. I think it was the year I stopped buying rap cds or listen to the radio.

Enough of these sugar coated wack, lame people in the game aka J.Cole, Wale, Meek Mill, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa etc. I mean honestly they’re not what hiphop used to be and what it really is. Its so horrible to listen to these artists especially J.Cole. It sucks and we’re being forced to listen to these artists and fore fed their lame raps. Bring back those amazing sounds of the 90s.

What hip hop REALLY is is block party music. I don’t like J Cole, and I grew up on 90s music, but what we did wasn’t “realer” than what these cats are doing. Real hip hop used to be about having fun, so Big Sean fits the mold perfectly IMO. I may not like what he does, but we need to let go of the past and let the music evolve.

Nah out of all the cats out now, u target the one who IS actually bringing it back to 90’s Nas/Jay-Z shit. Your paragraph has NO grounds/basis/truth or logic whatsoever. Just thought you should know that.

@megatron/the method:
my comment wasn’t directed toward “you” personally. the first part was simply written as a counterargument to your notion that what asap rocky did was “refreshing”. what would’ve been refreshing was if he had made that comment from the jump (i.e. in the pitchfork interview) instead of having to come back and clarify.
the rest of my comment was directed to anyone ignorant enough to think any rapper today is getting 3 mil to sign to a major label.
p.s. – i’m not lame/stupid enough to think cool points are getting passed out for taking any type of class. that part of my “rant” was merely to bolster my argument (i.e. to illustrate that i’m not just making up facts out of whole cloth like most people seem to do when they talk about the music industry).
