10 Years Later: UTFO tongues down The Real Roxanne
Posted by Miss Info under beef , good for hip hop , old music , photos , relationships and family[29] Comments
What lies 10 years from now for our current crop of beefing rappers?
The future is a huggable one, people. Plan accordingly.
Here’s what my twitpal Alyse from said:
“Twenty-five years after the release of UTFO’s “Roxanne, Roxanne”, the most famous Hip-Hop romantic pursuit has finally come to an end as lead member Kangol Kid makes up/out with The Real Roxanne. After 10 years of “Beef”, the two had not spoken until last week at a show in New York where the olive branch was delivered and sealed with what appears to be more than a friendly kiss. Hip-Hop now has its happy ending!”
To the experts: what was the beef between Kangol and The Real Roxanne about? I wasn’t up on that part of the saga. They had a falling out 10 years ago?
Backstory to the Roxanne song (and hilarious voiceover) after the jump….
UPDATE: another photo of Real Roxanne and Kangol as well…
(love Roxanne Shante by the way, lol. She’s so dope)
(and the random Bishop Don Magic Juan shot is priceless too)

Lemme try to sort this one out. Around 1998/9 do you remember when there was this resurgence of the Old School (?) and all of the 80’s acts showed up again and starting doing shows and tours?
Well, Full Force was busy producing for Platinum acts and boy bands so U.T.F.O. got together with The Real Roxanne to be an act and they were on MTV and BET’s Rap City, etc. making appearances.
I heard stuff that it had to do with her getting a (significantly) lower amount of show money than U.T.F.O. and the fact that she didn’t really write her own rhymes (she had ghostwriters and Chubb Rock wrote her entire last LP on Select Records) and that when they were in negotiations to record some tracks Kangol was gonna write her rhymes AND do production…no money for Roxanne! Plus they had some previous personal issues.
This is all rumor and some conjecture from shit I heard from industry heads around 10 years ago, mind you.
One.

But I thought “The Real Roxanne” was actually the fake Roxanne. I thought Roxanne Shante was the actual Real Roxanne.
How come this is still so confusing to me after all these years?
And why does Kane look like a sane ODB?
ps – even though the “Real” Roxanne was the fake one and also couldn’t rap for shit – I think she alone triggered my body to start going into puberty back then.
Was that TMI?

well, the 25 year long beef was between utfo and roxanne *shante*. the real roxanne used to work with utfo, as your beef documentary snippet explains. your friend above gives out the science about a falling out between utfo and the real roxanne *10* years ago, so the headline to this story needs to be changed before people think your entry is referring to roxanne shante.

Wow, Apache & Nikki D making out would be phenomenal.
I remember there was a big deal made about Nikki D being the first woman ever signed to Def Jam. MTV would run this little informational segment on her before they played her video.
I also remember how lots of girls got all thugged out after seeing that “Gangster Bitch” video.
INFO – did you adopt the “Murder Minya” moniker before or after “Gangsta Bitch” dropped?

HAHAA….actually Murder Minya was a nickname from the Ego Trip boys because I lived in Harlem and I was pals with Mase, lol

Oh! Minya! I was like she knows her hip hop history. I used to see that name in many hip hop mags back in the day… explains everything.

In response to the “isn’t the Real Roxanne the fake Roxanne” question…
… Roxanne Shante made the first response record to Roxanne, Roxanne. After hearing it UTFO auditioned a girl by the name of Elease Jack for the part of their Roxanne and she record the record the Real Roxanne. From what I have been able to gather so far, Select Records dropped Elease because she was only 14 years old. UTFO then auditioned Adelaida Martinez to play the part of Roxanne for the Roxanne, Roxanne video. She became known as the Real Roxanne from then on. But she was not the one who was on the original track. She didn’t release an album as The Real Roxanne until 1998.
So, yes, the rapper known as the Real Roxanne is not the original Roxanne.
The song Roxanne Roxanne was not about any of the Roxanne’s who actually made records. Roxanne Shante made her diss record, Roxanne’s Revenge, as a response to UTFO cancelling a show with Marley Marl.

Actually you are WRONG!!! Nikki D. was signed to Def Jam before Bo$$. Nikki was signed around 1988/89ish when she appeared on Def Jam label mate r&b singer Alyson Williams song “My Love is Raw”. In 1990 she went on to release her first single “Lettin off steam” and in 91 her full album “Daddy’s Little Girl”. Bo$$ hadn’t released her first single on Def Jam West until mid to late 92 “I don’t give a fuck” she did however earlier in 91 appear on AMG album. Nikki D. Is infact the first female rapper signed to Def Jam.
