Breaking news coming out of Atlanta as 21 Savage has reportedly been arrested by ICE. First reported by Atlanta’s WSBTV, the rapper whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, is a U.K. national that initially arrived in the U.S. legally in 2005. 21 Savage failed to leave the country after his visa expired in 2006. ICE spokesperson Bryan Cox tells reporter Mark Winne of WSB that, “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested unlawfully present United Kingdom national Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph AKA ‘21 Savage’ during a targeted operation with federal and local law enforcement partners early Sunday in metro Atlanta.”
Another ICE spokesperson released a statement to CNN stating that, “His whole public persona is false. He actually came to the U.S. from the U.K. as a teen and overstayed his visa.” 21 Savage’s lawyer, Dina LaPolt, tells TMZ that “We are working diligently to get Mr. Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with authorities to clear up any misunderstanding. Mr. Abraham-Joseph is a role model to the young people in the country — especially in Atlanta, Georgia and is actively working in the community leading programs to help underprivileged youths in financial literacy.”
21 is currently in custody and is held as removal proceedings are underway.
