If dope beats and clever rhymes are your thing, then CyHi The Prynce’s Black Hystori Project has probably stayed in rotation. G.O.O.D. Music’s ATLien takes cues from Yeezus and channels the higher power (albeit in a more modest manner) in the video for “3:16,” the latest in support of his mixtape. With a Jesus Piece around his neck and a Bible in hand, CyHi The Pastor delivers his lyrical sermon to the congregation.

nardwuar future.jpg

Nope, Nardwuar isn’t finished yet. The Human Serviette returns with yet another interview from his SXSW trip, this time with the one and only Future Vandross. Their chat was pretty brief, but it brought a few surprises as Future talked about his love for OG rappers like Kool Moe Dee, Mistah F.A.B. and Too $hort, the cartoon Popeye and why cheesecake is the best late-night treat. His response to Nardwuar’s extraordinary gift to stand like a statue was also great: “Man, you still posing? You gonna turn into a manikin.”

smoke dza dream zone achieve

With Dream.ZONE.Achieve dropping at midnight, Smoke DZA serves up a last treat off his forthcoming album with “Fhvt BVsturd,” featuring fellow New York renaissance man Joey Bada$$. Backed by tingly production from Kirk Knight, DZA reminds us why he’s one of the best functioning weed rappers in the game; yes, he gets higher than a muthafugging helicopter, but he can still attack the beat with intricate rhymes (“I came here to conquer/Mantra: think of a bunch of double entendres”).

The braggadocio is balanced out with some self-depreciating humor (“Fat bastard, rolling up a dutch master,” he spits on the hook), proving that even as his star continues to rise (did we mention he’s got a joint project with Cam’ron coming out?), Smoke DZA remains the lovable stoner you can kick back and abuse substances with.

laura

Let’s not pretend that the dudes of HOT97 don’t try to make it a boys club at the station. If Angie Martinez is the ringleader of the ladies of This Is HOT97, then Miss Info and Laura Stylez are the underbosses of the crew. Even with Ebro, FunkFlex, Cipha, Peter, DJ Enuff and the rest of the men going hard everyday, the ladies hold it down regardless.

“I work with a bunch of savages!” Laura explains, after revealing that her male coworkers at the morning show tease her relentlessly for being a rtookie. “I almost feel like the testosterone makes us tougher,” Miss Info adds. “It also makes it so we can’t take ourselves too seriously.”

Before the show officially debuts next Monday (Mar. 31 10:30pm ET) on VH1, take a look at this introspective piece on Info and Laura.

amazing spider-man 2

Is it me or have movie soundtracks got a lot better these past few years? Gone are the days when you’ll see some of rap’s biggest names on one project, à la Above the Rim, but since the overwhelming success of Pharrell’s “Happy,” it seems like the film world has upped its soundtrack game.

Just take the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2 album, which just so happens to have landed a monster of a collaboration from Alicia Keys, Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell. “It’s On Again” is a typically cinematic cut which opens with a fiery verse from K. Dot before Ms. Keys smooths things out over Skateboard’s sleek and funky production. Check out pictures from the video shoot here, and listen to the track below.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack arrives April 22, while the film itself hits theaters on May 2.

childish gambino freestyle.jpg

It seems like impromptu cyphers are becoming a recurring scene at Childish Gambino concerts. After trading rhymes with Chance The Rapper in Chicago earlier this month, Donald Glover held another off-the-cusp freestyle session during last night’s show at The Cutting Room in New York City. This time, Joey Bada$$ and Ab-Soul happened to be in the building, and the trio duly killed it.

During his Unplugged-style set in the Big Apple, ‘Bino also brought out Lion Babe to cover Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You,” and let SZA perform her new song, “Child’s Play.”

nas john f kennedy.jpg

With Illmatic hitting the grand old age of 20 next month, Nas kicked off the “One Mic: Hip-Hop Culture Worldwide” festival at John F. Kennedy in Washington D.C. on Saturday night (March 30) by performing his iconic debut album in its entirety. Backed by the 40-member National Symphony Orchestra, lead by conductor Steven Reineke, the Queensbridge MC ran through his 10-track collection in style.

Nas also played a medley of other hits including “If I Ruled the World,” “Street Dreams” and “Made You Look,” and even took it back to his very first guest spot by performing Main Source’s “Live at the Barbeque.”
