February 2013

Where music and fashion meets. All eyes were on BET’s 9th annual “Rip the Runway” fashion show at New York City’s Hammerstien Ballroom on Wednesday night. Co-hosted by Kelly Rowland and Boris Kodjoe, some of music’s finest performed as models hit the catwalk in some of today’s eye-catching styles and trends.

Meek Mill and Rick Ross burned the place down to “Believe It,” while Trinidad James shined bright with “All Gold Everything.” Omarion slowed things down with his Self Made 2 single “M.I.A.,” and Chris Brown’s new artist Sevyn Scooter rocked her debut single “I Like It.” The Smith household served a double-dose as Jaden performed while sister Willow modelled his MSFT line. Catch the full show when it airs on BET on Wednesday, March 20 at 8 p.m. EST.

ab-soul kendrick lamar

Just a day after Kendrick Lamar took over NYC with not one, but two, live shows (which boasted guest appearances from A$AP Rocky and 50 Cent), it was Ab-Soul’s turn to take center stage in the Big Apple last night with his own headlining gig at S.O.B.’s. And surprise, surprise, with his Black Hippy brother still in town, the Black Lip Bastard welcomed Kendrick to his set, where they charged through “Backseat Freestyle.” Rocky and Smoke DZA also joined Solo on stage during the show. Thanks to Break On A Cloud for the footage.

dc3 cover

Meek Mill upped the anticipation for his forthcoming Dreamchasers 3 mixtape last night by posting a picture which teases the project’s tracklist. According to the snapshot below, the tape will clock in at 16 tracks — a mix of both original songs and freestyles — and feature guest appearances from Future, Waka Flocka Flame, Jadakiss, Trina and his Dream Chasers artist, Guordan (who guests on the previously heard “From Da Bottom“). He captioned it with, “Tryna get this #dc3 right… I ain’t add no features yet! #Uready,” so don’t take it as confirmation just yet.

Speaking to MTV during the NBA All-Star weekend in Houston, the MMG rapper backed up his comments made to VIBE earlier this month by saying that Dreamchasers 3 will arrive in early April — around the same time his Dreams Come True tour gets underway.

eddie huang

The homie Eddie Huang, a.k.a. Mr. Fresh Off the Boat, made his TED Fellowship official last night as he gave a speech at the TED 2013 conference in Long Beach, California. The restauranteur-slash-writer-slash-hip-hop nerd recalled his first encounter with racism, and explained how his initial reaction — to fight back and distance himself from the dominant culture — only served to isolate him. It was on a trip to Taiwan when he realized that living without these barriers would allow him to live a full and free life. Always with the dope insight. Check out some audience-filmed footage of Eddie’s speech below.

You can make that 2 epic nights of comedy at New York’s legendary Comedy Cellar. Though, there hasn’t been any footage, iPhone photos and reports from audience members have produced some scarce details on what went down. Apparently, on Tuesday Chappelle performed an announced set, followed by Chris joining in after about 45 minutes. According to Gawker, they joked about going on tour together and hit everything from the:

“Oscars, Seth MacFarlane, Kevin Hart, Prince, President Obama and, at some point, Chappelle reportedly convinced Rock to text Jay-Z to see if the rapper could join them for a late-night meal of spaghetti. The rapper didn’t respond, so the duo called and left messages for Arsenio Hall and Lenny Kravitz.”

But, Wednesday night proved to be another legendary night for comedy. This time, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, and Marlon Wayans all hit the stage for an impromptu comedy jam session. Fortunately, for us Questlove was in the building and gave these deets.

Chappelle did an amazing off the top bit about what life will be like in a South African jail with prosthetic legs…and the pope quitting his career too. & then the floodgates opened: Hart riffed on Spilling drinks on Hov then everyone got in a cipher doing a mini roast/dozens/lovefest about each other. It was honest to god like watching the comic version of “scenario” or “the symphony” jokes and punchlines were flying fast. Stories of way back when was told. And I had the best seat in the house (Dave told me to play piano….but I took the bench just to get a good view) amazing night watching #themaster5

The controversial Chris Brown and Rihanna inspired Law & Order SVU episode provided plenty of awkward moments and cheesiness as it debuted last night on NBC. Based around the abusive relation between a celebrity couple, Micha Charles and Caleb Bryant, their story line seemed a bit excessive at times with killings and violence. At one point, the detectives even suggest the stars go a double date with Rihanna and Chris Brown. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Solange brought her funky sounds to the Late Show with David Letterman on Wednesday night. Glowing in a navy and white polka dot ensemble, the singer/songwriter brought her band along to perform “Don’t Let Me Down.” You can find the soulful feel good record on Solange’s True EP that’s out on iTunes now.

Welcome to Atlanta. Trinidad James reps for the 404 in the remix video for his street anthem “All Gold Everything.” The rookie cruises through the trap with fellow ATLien’s T.I., Young Jeezy, and 2 Chainz in the Motion Family-directed clip. Trinidad James’ Don’t Be S.A.F.E. mixtape is out now iTunes.

cee-lo green

There’s no denying the catchiness of Cee-Lo Green’s “Only You,” so it’s only right the man give his single a glossy visual makeover. In the newly debuted video, the Goodie Mob crooner and his guest singer Lauriana Mae stroll down the street, only for the world around them to shape-shift — not too unlike the epic scenes from Inception. It definitely seems to tie in with the concept of the song, which, according to Cee-Lo himself, is about “two people on different paths, hoping for the best, hoping that those paths lead to each other.”

Out now on iTunes, “Only You” is the lead single from Cee-Lo’s upcoming solo album, Cee-Lo Green… Is Everybody’s Brother.

shine on

After collaborating for “Check The Sign” as part of Jordan’s XX8 Days of Flight campaign earlier this month, Big K.R.I.T. and Bun B share the mic once again for the former’s brand new single, “Shine On.” Not only delivering some heavily-twanged, super-melodic bars, Krizzle also provides the crawling bassline and soulful hook to give this record a vintage Southern feel. Meanwhile, Bun does what Bun does best and cruises over the beat with a slick closing verse. You’ll find this track on K.R.I.T.’s upcoming mixtape, King Remembered In Time.
