He shook up the rap industry with his “King of New York” claim on “Control,” but Kendrick Lamar reigns top spot for this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards. After performing at last year’s awards, the TDE representer leads all with 14 nominations. His good kid, m.A.A.d city album has garnered him nods such as Lyricist of the Year, MVP of the Year, and Album of the Year.

Lamar’s now platinum-selling debut will go head-to-head with Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail, Nas’ Life Is Good, J. Cole’s Born Sinner, and Wale’s The Gifted for Album of the Year. Right behind Kendrick in the nomination pack are Drake and J. Cole, with 13 and 10 nods respectively.

Hosted this year by Snoop Dogg, the 2013 BET Hip-Hop Awards tapes on September 28 at Atlanta’s Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center followed by the network premiere on October 15 at 8 p.m. EST.
