September 2012

Earlier this week we caught photos of T.I. and Lil’ Wayne in the streets of New Orleans filming the video for their collaboration “Ball.” The upcoming single off TIP’s Trouble Man album was filmed in Hollygrove, the area where Weezy was raised in. From a skate park party packed with women, to a band of young trumpet players, here’s an extended behind-the-scenes look of the clip with cameos from Rico Love, Birdman, Mack Maine, and T.I.’s son Domani.

It was A$AP over everything as the “LongLiveASAP” tour came home to New York City’s Roseland Ballroom on Thursday. Headlined by A$AP Rocky, the Harlemnite’s tore down the sold-out capacity venue with cult favorites off the LiveLoveA$AP and Lord$ Never Worry projects. Flatbush Zombies and Bodega Bamz added to the on stage party riot as guest appearances.

It’s been a long road for Brooklyn, but the day is finally here. Later tonight, Jay-Z will christen the new billion-dollar Barclays Center with the first of eight concerts in his hometown of Brooklyn, New York. Before the inaugural performance, celebrities, industry execs, and close friends of the mogul attended the opening of the new 40/40 club located in the new arena, which serves home for the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets (formerly the New Jersey Nets).

Rihanna, Questlove of The Roots, J. Cole, Lyor Cohen, Angie Martinez, Anthony Mandler, NBA All-Stars Deron Williams and Joe Johnson, and our own Miss Info attended the swanky event. Fans who visit the new 40/40 club will also get a full view of the new hardwoord court, which opens for basketball when the Nets play the crosstown rivals New York Knicks on November 1.

I walked around here earlier and I just seen everybody busy and at work trying to finish up and it was a great feeling. A guy stopped me in the hallway and said, ‘Man this is a great thing for New York City.’ And that’s what the whole thing was about.” said Jay-Z to MTV News when getting his first look of the new sports bar and nightclub on Thursday night.

Recently, Diplo tweeted he was in a studio session with none other than J. Cole. And here’s what looks like a preview of what to expect from Cole World and one of the hottest producers currently in the game. The song, “Get Free Cole World” is a remix of Major Lazer and Amber Coffman’s “Get Free” which you can purchase on iTunes. It features the North Carolina MC with some wise words on the outro from the late Tupac Shakur. By the way, today marks the 1-year anniversary of J. Cole’s stellar Cole World: The Sideline Story debut album.

This Saturday, BET will tape the 2012 Hip Hop Awards (is this the last remaining pre-taped award show? The fear of spontaneous mishap is the best part of award shows, though!) down in Atlanta, GA. The only real highlight of these festivities is generally the really well-done “cyphers” featuring incredible spit from everyone from Eminem to Nicki to Pusha to Busta and more. This year, the cyphers will reportedly include DMX, Snoop Dogg, T.I., Eve, ASAP Rocky, Cassidy, Mystikal, Talib Kweli, B.O.B and more.
But all eyes will also be on the main show for the planned tribute to the late hip hop super manager Chris Lighty.

Complex is reporting that, according to their sources, the Lighty tribute will be even more notable because it will bring together two bitter rivals, 50 Cent and Fat Joe, onstage for the first time in…well, maybe ever? (And “bitter” is an understatement when describing the level of beef these two have engaged in over the years) But Fat Joe has acknowledged that even during the height of their tension, he still maintained love and respect for 50’s manager and business partner Chris Lighty, who was instrumental in his early career. And recently 50 said he had somewhat moved past the beef with Joe. Not quite willing to mend the fence…just not lean on it any more.

So…will these two stars stand together onstage this weekend?
Well…not exactly….but, sort of!

Exclusive details (and the latest from the Chris Lighty private investigation)…

(Grizzly Bear “Yet Again”)

This past Monday when I hosted the finale of Vitamin Water and The Fader’s Uncapped tour…I mentioned onstage that the combo of Frank Ocean and Bon Iver was a dream lineup for me because I’ve always been a “happy person who loves sad things.” (Big up The Fader n Brooklyn Vegan for their great coverage) So it makes sense that I’m also obsessed with other examples of melodic-melancholia. Like Joy Division, and Morrissey, and sometimes Lana Del Rey, sometimes Coldplay, The Chromatics, the XX, etc etc. All the usual hipster sadcore favorites, lol. I’m not inventing the wheel here. But I also love Grizzly Bear (watch “Shift”, and “Two Weeks”). Such lovely tunes.

The new Grizzly Bear album Shields is fantastic…as evidenced by the two lead-off singles, “Sleeping Ute” and now “Yet Again.” Watch the new “Yet Again” video above…a collaboration with Vice’s The Creators Project, Grizzly Bear, and director Emily Kai Bock. It’s ice-capades meets the exorcist ; )

After rocking the stage at Texas Southern University in Houston for Vitamin Water “Uncapped,” our own Miss Info caught up with French Montana and Miguel. The trio discuss the different paths and struggles they faced during their early come up to the success stories they’ve individually become in 2012. While French touches on his entrepreneurship in the streets with his mixtapes and DVD’s, Miguel explains where his resilience comes from. The Coke Boys general ends off on a funny note touching on his famous bear hat, worn on the cover of his 2011 XXL Freshmen cover.

On the music side of things, Miguel’s new album Kaleidoscope Dream arrives in stores next Tuesday with fans and critics already raving over his sophomore effort. French Montana’s hasn’t announced the date for his Excuse My French debut, but revealed it’ll feature The Weeknd, Lana Del Rey, M.I.A., and Diddy among others.

Fresh off announcing their soon-to-be expected first child, Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose grace the cover of XXL’s Oct/Nov issue. With his sophomore O.N.I.F.C. LP arriving December 4th, Wiz discusses working on the album while at home with Amber, celebrity couple in hip-hop, being in love and becoming parents, and more. In an excerpt below, Amber speaks on her undenying love for the Taylor Gang general. Catch the issue when it hits stands nationwide on October 9.

“[H]e’s just a genuine sweet guy. And that’s what made me fall in love with him. And I just said, “You know what, I don’t care if he’s a rapper.” I don’t care if people say, “Oh, you’re a gold-digger.” I don’t care if people say, “Oh, you went from one rapper to another,” or whatever. I love him. I don’t look at him as a rapper. I look at him as Cameron Thomaz, not even Wiz Khalifa. I just fell so deeply in love with him, I didn’t care what anyone says.”
