April 2011

You already know I’m a hardcore Harry Potter fan….and with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 right around the corner (july 15)….I’m also a huge fan of how this epic series is staying the course. After 10 years (seriously? 10 years?) of Potter movies, and immeasurable hype and franchising….Deathly Hallows Part 1 was dark and creepy and really well-done. How do you pick 3 kids and predict that 10 years later they don’t end up untalented or hideous or awkward? Either way, after devoting years of viewership to other shows that ended up making me want to kick a hole in the TV (ahem!)…I can’t wait to see this final chapter.

Then we can just move on to more Hunger Games hype…and this X-Men: First Class movie, which looks amazing too…Fassbender and McAvoy? Fantastic eyebrow furrowing!
If you haven’t seen that trailer…

DJ Khaled told us he literally just emails everyone in his contact list a beat and whoever replies with a verse gets on the song. Wait.. no he didn’t (ha!). In all seriousness though one of the hardest working individuals in the hip-hop game just dropped the mega mix visuals to “Welcome To My Hood.” Don’t blink because you’ll miss like 5 of your favorite rappers.

The Slime gods blessed Cipha Sounds, K. Foxx and Peter Rosenberg’s Juan Epstein podcast for another impromptu sit-down. So according to insiders, Odd Future and team caught a $2.5 million check with that Sony/RED pressing and distribution deal. Now P&D deals are the only thing RED does, so the issues of masters ownership and control weren’t really a problem. But this is certainly a huge number for a crew with such a meteoric rise to recognition.

Meanwhile, Tyler the Creator appears on the cover of British music magazine NME’s irreverent “God Save Us From Kate & Wills” issue. The pull quote is only part of Tyler’s “never mind the bollocks” attitude….just watch the behind the scenes video from the cover shoot…

NME: Will and Kate and their upcoming wedding? No?
Tyler: Who the f–k is that? N—a, I’m from Compton.

The most thugged out dudes we know from South Harlem and Hot Carl recently sat down with famed hip-hop photographer Jonathan Mannion to discuss his illustrious career in which he worked with the likes of DMX, Hov, Em, ODB, and just about anybody was has made an impact in hip-hop since the early 90s. I mean, dude shot 7 Jay-Z covers, so you know he’s got stories for days.

Pac caught a lot of flack and controversy for those infamous bathtub photos, but I guess that was the point. Urban empire unearthed this lost footage of the behind scenes from that  photo shoot, dubbed “Becoming Clean”. Famed photographer David Lachapelle, did the camera work (and his crew), right after 2Pac was released from prison.

While it isn’t the video for her new single, Beyoncé delivers her video for “Move Your Body”. The Melina-directed clip is a part of the “Let’s Move! Flash Workout” campaign with First Lady Michelle Obama.  If you remember B’ re-did the Swizz Beatz-produced  2006 smash hit “Get Me Bodied” to help fight childhood obesity.
