December 2010

Maybe a possible sign of the Brick Squad album coming in 2011… who knows?, but for now check out the latest from Waka, Gucci and OJ over the sounds of Drumma Boy. It seems as though a verse from Birdman might have been intended to be added or maybe replace OJ’s spot, since Gucci shouts out Young Money/Cash Money during the intro, while OJ never gets mentioned.

Though many would like to think otherwise the genius that is Kanye West is actually the end result of a collaborative effort. His latest album and fashion direction is no exception. The LA Times recently went onto further prove this theory by getting in touch with Kanye’s engineer, Andrew Dawson,  for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. While fashion boutique Opening Ceremony caught up with Ye’s current stylist, 19-year old Cassius Clay. (Props Al lindstrom & Aqua)

LA Times: How did you get involved with the “Fantasy” album, and what were some things you talked with Kanye about in terms of engineering and mixing it?

Andrew Dawson: “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” pretty much started New Year’s Eve 2009. He flew everyone out to Hawaii the day before New Year’s Eve … and I remember on New Year’s Eve I was in the studio getting everything ready to go for the next day. And on Jan. 1, we were getting into the recording sessions and worked pretty much 24-7 for six months straight out of Hawaii. I literally would leave to go shower, change clothes and come back to the studio. There weren’t many beach days. But Kanye went through his process and worked on it solid for a good six to seven months.

But as far as engineering, there are certain sounds and certain production aspects that he really likes. If there’s a sound or an idea he wants, he’ll take it to, like, an extreme, to where you start to wonder, “Why is this so far out there?” Then he’ll pull it back to a perfect amount. He’s the master of knowing how to push things almost too far. …  I did some co-production on “Power.” I was the one who found that “21st Century Schizoid Man” sample and chopped it up.

King Mag is the next publication to court Nicki Minaj for their mag’s cover. Check out this sneak peak until the Mar/Apr issue drops in January 2011.

KING: History has shown that acting is the likeliest transition for rappers. Considering your background, do you want to dabble in Hollywood?
NICKI MINAJ: Of course.

What would be your dream role?
I’d like to play someone in a Tim Burton movie, where I get dressed up and painted and crazy.

You kind of do that now.
Then I want to be able to do some action stuff, like Angelina Jolie.

Boi-1da IK

Last Wednesday, while Grammy nominated producer Boi-1da finished his Christmas shopping, I caught him on the cell to discuss a few of his current and future projects, as well as the status of Drake’s next album. (via VIBE)

How’s Drake’s new album coming along?

We were actually just up in New York working, Lil Wayne was in there, too. I gave him stuff for Tha Carter IV. Man, 2011 is going to be a good year for music. Drake’s in tip top shape and what’s amazed me is that lyrically he’s gotten better. He was already an outstanding lyricist but now I’m just in anticipation of what people are going to think when they hear his new music.

Do you think he’s out to prove himself more as a rapper and lyricist?

Yea, I know a lot of people had criticized him for singing, but I think he’s just coming back to show people why they fell in love with him, like ‘did you forget about me?.’ And it’s really coming out in his raps. It’s something I can’t even really explain it.
